That much was actually true. And the Hellhound seemed much more interested in flirting than kicking ass. Power was respected in the supernatural community. Even if you weren’t in college, someone would flex to show off.

“Maybe they didn’t because of Azren,” I pointed out.

“Nah, that’s the perfect time to do it. He’s a friend of their dad,” West said. “If they were going to make a show of power, they would have done it when that awful girl opened her mouth. I’m telling you, she was pretty low-key and cool when we were sparring.”

Maybe. But it was just the first day. They had time for that. It was how the supernatural community worked. I didn’t want to be around when they went off.

My twin always made friends much easier than I did. Like, our faces were practically identical, but she was always more approachable. I wasn’tshockedshe had someone in our dorm room before me, but Mags was a hybrid now and caught a little bit of the shifter possessiveness for what was theirs. Mags was also a witch, and witches were all about the polyamory, but you should probably leave the country if you fucked someone outside that inner circle.

I didn’t expect Mags or Matilda to pick someone the first day. What did we know about this banshee, anyway? I was looking for something to do since I hardly knew anyone here, and one of the people I knew had been a long-time nemesis. Maybe I’d run into West again. He was fun, and he loved dodgeball. Those were big bonuses in my book. Also, the fact that even when I realized it was going to be a challenge and started working at it, I still missed a few times when I tried to zap him with magic.

I didn’t run into West, though. I ran smack into that basilisk from history class that flashed snake eyes at me when he caught me staring. Still, I felt terrible about it because it was my fault, and I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going. I tried offering him my hand.

“Oh, shit. I’m so sorry. Are you okay?”

They just glared at me. His eyes went to snake slits again, and he ignored my hand as he got to his feet. My magical species classes in high school covered basilisks. Sometimes, their eyes did that when they were trying to make a point, but sometimes, they couldn’t help it if they felt threatened.

“Just watch where you are going.”

“Do you…think I want to hurt you? I’m not a dark witch.”

“You couldn’t hurt me even if you tried. I know how to handle witches. Stay away from me.”

Okay then. Kaylee Krauss wasn’t the only student at this school who hated me. I didn’t even know the basilisk’s name, nor had I really done anything to him. If he was holding the history between witches and basilisks against me without even getting to know me, that was his problem. If he was here to get revenge on witches for what happened in the past, then it was going to be my problem, and I’d stop him.

Before I could even think about it, my phone went off. My sister texted me that her tryst was over and it was safe to return to the dorm room. That was fast. I slipped into a dark corner where no one could see me and portalled back in. Matilda and Mags were sprawled on her bed, and my sister’s lipstick was perfect, so I was guessing her date didn’t go well.

“I need the gossip,” I said, flopping on my bed.

“Oh, she was cute, but when she got in my bed, she stuck her gum on my bedpost like a savage, then informed me she’s bisexual but doesn’t eat the kitty. I told her I wasn’t a stone top and asked if she was okay with that. The girl didn’t know what that was but asked if I could introduce her to Michael, so I kicked her out of our dorm. She took the gum with her and stuck it back in her mouth,” Matilda said.

“Ew. Maybe you need to have better criteria than looking cute in a schoolgirl uniform.”

“Okay, in all fairness, she’s also an insanely powerful banshee,” Mags said.

“Everyone at this school who got in fairly is extremely powerful. You don’t have to start recruiting on the first day.”

My sister just snorted.

“If you weren’t so stubborn, you could have let that sexy lion win a few more times. Don’t think I didn’t see he got you on your back.”

“I thought you were too wrapped up in the banshee to notice he beat me.”

“Twin magic.”

“Actually, I ratted you out,” Mags said. “He’s cute. I had a lioness in my coven the first time I was alive. They are remarkably strong and fun to have around. He’s got that pesky dick, soIdon’t want him, but you’re into that kind of thing.”

“He’s not a student. I don’t want to get him fired. Remember what happened when Gabriel gave that legacy student a D, and she lied and said they were having an affair to get him fired? She thought her last name would save her from a truth potion. I could beat one, but he couldn’t. I’m not ruining his entire career.”

“That rule just applies to professors. The lion doesn’t work for the academy. He works for the student he’s translating for,” Mags said. “It’s free season on sexy lions.”

“I’d distract him. He has a very important job.”

“Why do you have to distract him? Your mom taught all of you sign language. Go forth and prosper,” Mags said.

“Okay, the two of you might be itching for a pack/coven mashup, but I’d like to enjoy being eighteen before I jump into anything.”
