“I know you don’thaveto as a god, but you might want to draw the pentagram on the floor, do the black salt circle, and light the candles,” Mags said.
“We can’t do candles in our dorm,” Matilda reminded her.
“And that’s areallyshitty rule,” Mags said. “People need to pray and there are ghostseverywhere.”
“We can if we use a lighter, but I don’t actually have one. I feel weird about conjuring one because Headmaster Krauss would total accuse me of using magic so she could expel me. I can’t do this in the temple,” I moaned. “What if someone comes in and hears me asking about death curses? It’ll cause a panic.”
“Or they’ll think you’re insane,” Matilda said.
“Not helping.”
“You’ve seen Reyson do this all the time. You can do this.”
I clapped my hands together and just ovaried up.
“I’m going to need the ghost who is in charge to get in here and answer some questions.”
An apparition of a stern woman with a dress that went from her chin to her ankles floated up through the floor. She crossed her arms and glared at me.
“So disrespectful for a freshman. But I’ve been told you leave the television on for entertainment and it’s amusing watching you flounder with your bullies, so I’ll allow your questions.”
“Is there a death curse on these lands?”
She sniffed and looked offended.
“Tell the pretty Death god to do their own dirty work. They know how to get those answers.”
“Azren can’t bring any of you to the Aether. It’s a giant cosmic loophole. The gods that made you did that to cheat death and all it did was end up punishing you.”
“So they say.”
“Her dad is the God of Chaos. I think she knows,” Matilda drawled. “I thought ghosts were supposed to know everything.”
“Watch your mouth, Hellhound. We know about the necklace. We could whisper in some ears.”
“Please don’t. What my twin was trying to say is that my parents know Azren. They say Azren is brilliant and doesn’t lie. I believe them.”
“We’ve been watching the pretty Death god. For a while, their theory was thatyouwere going to go on a killing spree, little god.”
What the fuck? Azren could have shared that little tidbit with me from the start andaskedif I was planning on killing anyone. I wasn’t. That explained why they were so interested in how I was reacting to Kaylee Krauss. Asshole. They weren’t concerned about me. They were worried I was about to go on a murdering spree.
Mags put her hand on my shoulder.
“That’s to be expected. Azren had never met George before the first day of school. All they knew was that she is a god who happens to be eighteen with all the hormones that come with it. Azren was just being cautious. You can get angry, George, but they were right to consider it.”
“I guess,” I sulked.
I was still mad.
“Students are going to die,” Mags said. “You could help us by telling us if there’s a death curse on these grounds.”
“Students die here all the time. It used to be sickness and revenants. Sometimes it’s more than that.”
“You could help by telling us what’s happening.”
“We can’t,” she hissed. “Don’t ask us again.”
Whatever it was, clearly she was scared of it.
