I didn’t need to make some big show of power to get Paris to back off. She’d already tangled with one god and lost. I just needed to threaten to finish the job he did on her hair.
Azren floated into the room, so I took my seat. It wasn’t fair. I was just as much a god as Azren was, but I was nowhere near that ethereal or graceful. They sat on the edge of their desk and just stared at us. It was so nice having them back as our history teacher. I was guessing we could resume our private lessons, too, unless they were working with Baldur.
Loki wasn’t here. Either someone decided he shouldn’t be around college students after he fucked up Kaylee and Paris’s hair or he just got bored with teaching and decided not to show up anymore.
“I have an announcement to make,” Azren said. “Loki decided he didn’t really want to teach anymore if magical corrections were going to be such a big deal when it’s not for regular supernaturals. There are also two new gods on campus who will be teaching a class in a special kind of magic.
“They said it will come easier to witches, butanysupernatural can do it. It’s called Seidr and we have two experts to teach it. Odin will be teaching the beginner levels andhisteacher, Freya will be teaching the advanced levels. It’s a multifaceted form of magic that can do divination, healing, and illusions and it can be tapped into by anyone god-touched. Humans could do it if they dug down deep.
“If you’re interested, there’s a signup sheet in the dining hall. It’ll be an additional class added to your workload, but it’s completely worth it. Freya is an amazing teacher, and she taught it to me, too. Odin can be a little gruff, but he’s a good teacher. If you think you’re going to sign up for his class and try some of the things you do in my class because I have done nothing to you yet, just remember Thor was a little dick when he was a kid. He was this insanely powerful little asshole of a brute and Odin raisedhim into being a decent guy. Don’t fuck with him. I heard about what happened in the dining hall. You should probably avoid pissing off any of the many gods that are now at the Academy of the Profane. The only reason any of us haven’t seriously hurt you is because it’s not really a fair fight.”
I wanted to take that extra class so bad. Freya had taught me a little in addition to the rest of her knowledge, but to take a class at the Academy of the Profane with her as a professor would be amazing. Odin was probably a fantastic teacher, too.
Despite Azren’s warning, Odin was great with kids and probably college students, too. When we were staying at his chateau when we were kids, Michael and I were wrestling and broke some insanely expensive antique. My mom was so mad and embarrassed, but Odin just laughed, waved his hand to fix it, and told her we were only going to be this age once.
Dexter’s hand shot up and so did Drake’s. Dexter was pretty much Azren’s pet because he always asked Azren challenging questions or knew the answer when Azren asked us something. You wouldn’t even know Drake and Azren were so close from history class. Azren never called on him and Drake never raised his hand, even though I was pretty sure Drake knew the answer. Azren called on Dexter first.
“Pixie magic is chaotic by nature. It can backfire if we don’t learn to use it correctly. CouldItake this new class?”
“Dexter, you’re one of my best students, and when I was headmaster, pretty much all of your professors said the same about you. I think ifanypixie can handle Seidr, it’s you. Freya is also a close personal friend, and she’s loving your social media right now.”
She probably tuned in to his social media because he had several videos of people coming for me and losing, but she stayed because the rest of it was pretty awesome. His videos and posts were a mix of pixie shenanigans, social commentary, dodgeball, and he even roped my idiot brother into doing videos with him. Michael looked insanely happy, so those videos were my favorite. I didn’t thinkanythingembarrassed Dexter, but he blushed when Azren complimented him.
Azren nodded to Drake next.
“Is this going to make the witches more powerful?”
We were back to that. We’d come such a long way and then Kaylee broke into his dorm room and did the one thing he’d been paranoid about this entire time. And then she used the potion on people he cared about. Azren had known Drake longer than I had. They would know what to say in this situation.
“Maybe. Seidr would also give Basilisks a less fatal way to fight back. The divination portion could give you an idea if one of them is plotting against you. You’d have a form of magic to fight back with that only people who took this class would know about. You can’t always get close enough to bite someone. This would also help you if you think someone is thinking about breaking into your dorm again. You should do it.”
“Do wehaveto?” Paris asked. “Some of us are getting sick of the god invasion at the Academy of the Profane.”
“No one is forcing you,” Azren said, rolling their eyes. “You could totally decline an amazing opportunity to learn an old form of magic that would give you a leg up in the magical community, barely do any work at the best magical university in the country, and be content to be mediocre. Your last name will only get you so far in life.”
Paris shrieked and stormed out of class. At the rate she kept flouncing out of history, she was going to flunk the class if her papers weren’t any good. Before Azren could continue with their lecture someone came into the classroom after Paris slammed the door. He handed Azren a note and left. Azren gave it a glance.
“George, Headmaster Morningstar wants to see you in his office when you get a chance.”
Was it still a big secret Gabriel was my dad? He went by Bell on all his legal paperwork, but everyone still called him Morningstar because of the whole angel connection. It was honestly kind of disrespectful to my mom, but she didn’t mind or correct anyone, so the rest of us didn’t.
I just nodded. I loved Gabriel and now that he was at his rightful place as headmaster, I could visit him on campus more often.
I wasn’t sure what he wanted, but I was actually happy to get a summons from the headmaster.
george
. . .
Matilda, Mags, and I brought our lunch to my dad’s office. He was buried under paperwork but smiled when he saw us. We also brought him a plate. Gabriel was the kind of guy who got caught up in his work and forgot to eat. My mom and dads constantly had to remind him.
“Hey, girls.”
“I don’t see lunch,” Matilda said, putting her hands on her hips.
“You caught me. Lindsey left behind a mess. Azren tried to fix some of it, but they were more concerned with catching the killer. I’m having to go through all the strikes she ignored, probations that should have been enforced, and students who should have been expelled. Church Senior is helping me rewrite some school policies involving legacy students and wecannotlet the one about deaths on campus stand. We also had to adjust for having a god as a student for the first time.”
I groaned. Dexter wasn’t the only student at the Academy of the Profane with a massive social media following. He was the only one who cared more about me than going viral toaskif he should post the video of what went down in the dining hall when I ended up taking my necklace off. Everyone posted their videos. If they didn’t have a video, they made a text post about it.
