Nope, not chance he had kidnapped the real driver. Liam was the real driver.
“Fuck,” I groaned, stepping into the elevator. “Fuckity, fuck me, fuck meeee.” I squeezed my eyes shut not really caring who heard me as I slumped against the back of the elevator. If my two months and two days in New York City had taught me jack, it was that you could pretty much do as you pleased. No one would comment or bat an eyelash, so I was using my ‘do what I wanted’ card now. Anyone that met Liam would understand.
“You know, you’re supposed to let them wine and dine you first before that, but I mean, modern solutions for modern day problems, right?”
I cracked open an eye to see Claudia grinning at me. “My driver is an asshole,” I told her.
“You’re fucking the driver?” Her eyes took on a look of interest and I waved a hand at her.
“God no. I’d rather drown in the Hudson.”
“Yikes.”
“Yeah, I thought he had maybe killed the real driver but no such luck.”
Claudia’s face pulled into something close to confusion, but interested confusion, before she said, “Yeah, okay. What?”
“Don’t...don’t worry,” I said. “Have you sent in your resume?” I asked in hopes of changing the topic before I said something stupid like how hot Liam was. Or maybe how good he smelled too. Wasn’t it a bad sign that I already had memorized the scent of my new driver?
I was pretty sure it was.
She perked up and shook her head, eyes moving to watch the lights on the elevator floors change as we sped towards our floor. “Nope, was going to do that first thing. I cannot thank you enough again, Mel. I can’t believe you got this for me!”
I held up a hand stopping her. “I didn’t do a thing. All I did was bring some attention to your hard work. You did this, and if you get offered a position in Twin Forks, you earned it.” I continued on, stopping her when she made to protest, “But that doesn’t mean I am not game to come and crash at yours when you do get offered a position, because there is no way that Claire won’t appreciate your talent and hard work ethic.”
Claudia put a hand to her chest. “You say the most romantic shit to me.”
I lifted a shoulder in a shrug. “It’s what friends do.”
“No, it’s what good friends do,” she corrected me.
“Too true,” I nodded conceding to her point. The elevator door opened then and we both walked out onto the floor. I went to say something else, but my words got caught in my throat when I locked eyes with the woman from last night. I hadn’t noticed much about her the night before other than her embarrassed smile, and then there had been her gray eyes.
Those pretty but worried eyes.
We stared at one another for a beat and she blushed red before she gave me an awkward duck of the head known the office world over as the universal sign for ‘Hi and Bye’ and then turned sharply, striding out of sight.
“That was...weird,” Claudia murmured, watching the woman scurry away. “What’s with the intern?”
My eyebrows shot up. “Intern?” I whisper screamed to her, turning to watch the woman, no, girl? I didn’t fucking know anymore. “What—is she in college?”
“Yeah, same as all the other interns this year. What’s wrong? Why are you squeezing my arm off?”
I looked down then and saw that I was indeed squeezing the shit out Claudia’s arm. I let go with a shaky laugh. “I just--maybe it was nothing. It was nothing...I think.”
Claudia rubbed at her arm and then grabbed my hand, pulling me towards her office. “Yeah, I’m sure it was. Okay, I’m going to send off my resume but first,” she turned towards me and wiggled her eyebrows. “First, tell me you went on the app.”
“Oh that,” I replied, still looking in the direction of the girl, but Claudia would not be deterred. I guess it was for the best she was so focused otherwise I was going to go drag that intern back here and demand some fucking answers.
“Yes. Don’t ‘Oh, that’ me.”
“Yes,that?”I tried and she rolled her eyes at me.
“So you did go on there?”
“I may have.”
“Is that a yes or no, Mel? Give me concrete answers. It’s too early for coy, and you already said something about your asshole driver and also looked like you were going to chase an intern.”
