He snorted and we continued to eat in silence until he spoke up. “My replacement will be good. I made sure of it. He’s a good kid. You’ll like him.”

“A kid?” I raised an eyebrow. “What’s that mean? Is he in college or something?”

He laughed. “No, but he’s young, like you. I picked him out myself for you.”

“I’m not a kid.” I reminded him.

He waved his plastic fork at me. “You’re all kids when you’re my age, Mel.”

“Yeah, okay, Father Time.” I rolled my eyes at him, but I was smiling. I would miss getting to have this kind of banter and company every day, but for now I had it. There was no use in worrying over what would happen. The only thing I could do was be present in the now and enjoy what friend time I had left with Walt.

So that’s what I did.
