The queen catches us harboring a human and we'll be lucky if all she does is kill us. She'd turn us into mindless monsters who only do her bidding. Who she abuses and runs into the ground until their flesh rots off their bones and she moves on to new fae.
Cracking my neck, I try to ease the building tension there. My body still aches from where Reis and I fought. For what? A human.
I scoff, then guzzle a goblet of ale and slam it down on the table.
The woman is beautiful, that much is true. But what use is beauty when humans are so easily broken and swayed?
No use fucking voicing my concerns to Reis. Stubborn mule won't listen to me. He'll say that I'm being unreasonable. And he's got Thorne convinced too that the woman will be no trouble. His having us guarding her door is not for our safety, but for hers and to ensure his precious new toy doesn't run away.
Reis thinks he can protect her. Except no human has survived being in the realm since the rightful queen escaped.
My steps are heavy as I head from the kitchen and away from everyone.
I don’t trust her, and I don’t want her here. But it seems that my wishes mean nothing to Reis or even Thorne.
They are making a grave mistake. I bite back a curse and curl my hands into fists, wishing Thorne had killed her.
Both Reis and Thorne seem to have forgotten the risks that we face by having her here. If the queen finds out we are harboring a human fugitive, she'll gut us.
Yet, Reis fought for her to keep me from getting answers now on who the hell she is and how she got here. And for what? What has she offered us in return?
Fucking nothing.
At least I can stay the hell away from her.
I cannot stand the way she looked at us in the woods with those big, innocent eyes. She has no idea the danger she is in, and it is only a matter of time before she is hurt or before she reveals some evil plan.
I have had enough and I decide to take matters into my own hands. I will do everything in my power to protect our home and our way of life. Even if it means going against the wishes of Reis and Thorne.
My plan is risky, but it’s the only way to rid ourselves of the human for good. A grin splits my face at the thought. The human may be beautiful and fragile, but she does not belong here. It is time for her to return to her own world before it is too late.
Changing my direction from the path to my room, I switch to Reis's bedroom. Thorne is standing outside the door.
"What are you doing here?" he grumbles.
I lean against the opposite wall, crossing my arms over my chest. "Reis in there?" I nod to the closed door. It won't do any good if he is. I'd have to get him away from the human too.
"No." Thorne shakes his head. "Said he had to check the gates were secure."
Of course, he is. No way does he want the girl to escape until he's done with her. Though for the life of me, I can't think why he'd want her other than to play with her, and he's been known to get bored quickly from toys, but I can't wait that long. Already I feel like the queen's eyes are focused on us. And if the girl's father came through the rift as well, no doubt he's already been captured, and he'll say his daughter came with him.
No one can resist the queen's torture when she wants answers. She'll even get a fae dying of thirst to offer her his last drop of water to ease the pain. I swallow the pain sitting on my chest and shove away the memories of my scars running up and down my back from her affection.
"Reis wants me to watch her now." I uncross my arms, clenching my fists in case he doesn't believe me. Fighting both of them isn't something I want to do, but I will keep us safe.
"Why? I thought you had the morning shift and it is Reis' turn in a few hours." His dark brow furrows.
I shrug a shoulder like I don't fucking care. "Suit yourself." I turn and walk away, saying over my shoulder, "Just figured after the day we've had, you'd like a drink before settling in for the night."
When I turn the corner, I pause.
"Wait. Kaden."
My smile widens and I have to wipe it off my face before I return.
"Just one," Thorne promises and I pat him on the shoulder as he passes. “Then I’ll be back on duty.”
Ale and women are the only two obsessions Thorne has.
