Fine," I grumble. "But you better be quick about it. I don't want to be standing out here all night."
I push away the guilt that is gnawing at me for lying to him. I know I'm being selfish, but I can't shake the feeling that this human woman is nothing but trouble. I just want her out of our home and our lives as soon as possible.
Once he's gone, I throw open the door and stand on the threshold of the room and stare the woman down as she backs away from me. Good, she's scared. I like them scared.
She looks up at me with those big, innocent eyes again, and for a moment I feel a twinge of guilt. But I push it aside. I have a job to do.
"You need to leave," I say, my voice cold and firm.
The woman blinks in surprise, and I can see the fear in her bright eyes. "What do you mean?"
"You don't belong here," I say, trying to keep my anger in check. "You're a human, and you don't understand the dangers of our world. You are a liability, and it is only a matter of time before you get hurt." Not that I care what fucking happens to her, but I'll be damned if I let a human destroy the bond with me, Reis, and Thorne.
Her eyes fill with tears, and a pang of guilt presses into the back of my throat, but I push it aside. I cannot let her emotions sway me.
"Please," she begs, her voice trembling. "What about my father? The other monst— Reis said he’d help me find him."
I take a deep breath, trying to remain calm. Figures. She thinks of us as monsters like all humans that come across our kind. The muscle in my jaw throbs. "You need to go back to your world. You do not belong here," I snarl, lacing my voice with hatred.
"I-I..." She sniffles and looks away.
Except I don't wait for an excuse or placate her. I grab her arm, and she screams.
"Shut up or I'll make you."
With that, I drag her out of the bedroom. She doesn't fight me.
It is for the best, I tell myself. It is for the safety of us all.
Never mind that she could die a horrible death in the woods outside our gates trying to find her way back.
Not my problem.
"Ow, you're hurting me."
"Keep your fucking mouth shut," I hiss at her, hurrying us out the backdoor. Sniffing the air, I don't detect Reis's scent near.
"Come on," I say, my voice hard. "I'll get you past the gate. Don't ever come back."
"What about my father?" she asks, and I clench my jaw to keep from bellowing at her.
"He's on the other side of the woods, waiting for you, I'm sure." Only thing waiting for her is death. An icy finger trails down my spine. I don't even want to imagine what the queen will have planned for her.
Not my problem.
Only fate can help her now and that bitch has been a cruel mistress on her best days.
We reach the iron gate and I can't touch it or she'll see our weakness. Using a trickle of magic I push against the lock that Reis crafted. I'm not as skilled as he is in these areas, mine is healing, but I can get it to open.
"What's taking so long?" she asks, hopping from foot to foot. "It's freaking freezing out here."
And she has no damn boots. "It's a magical lock," I spit and she frowns at me.
"What, like demon magic?"
"Unseelie," I answer before thinking better of it. Shit.
"Dark fae?" Her nose scrunches up. "You're all fae?"
