“Nay.” He straightens, but there’s a pinch to the corners of his eyes. “You’re free and can leave any time you want.”
He has me there. I tried to leave and got lost, then taken by a dragon. And where would I go? I’ve no idea where I am or where my father is. As much as I hate to admit it, I need Thorne and the other monsters to help me.
We walk to Reis’s bedroom in silence. At the door, I turn, not sure what to say, but not wanting to leave either.
"Um… Goodnight." I stumble over the words.
He closes the distance between us.
His lips almost brush mine. I turn my head away, but he isn't deterred. He takes my face in his hands, the heat of his palms electrifying my skin.
My stomach flutters and I'm inching ever closer to him, my heart pounding in excitement. I’m breathless and confused. Yet, I tell myself that he’s a stranger. Sure he saved me but he also tried to kill me the first time we met.
He leans down a whisper away from my mouth and my heart is beating frantically. But instead of giving in, I pull back awkwardly.
“Well, goodnight.” I rush into Reis’s bedroom and close the door behind me.
I tell myself that it’s best if I don’t get too attached. He is dangerous... they all are and I can't lose my heart to beasts… to fae.
Leaning against the door, my heart still pounding.
What just happened?
My breath is coming in ragged gasps, my heart is racing in my chest. That was wild and intense and he didn’t even kiss me.
I stand still for a moment, my head spinning and my heart not stopping a beat.
CHAPTER8
THORNE
Rage whips through me like a whirlstorm as I make my way to Kaden's bedroom. I don't bother knocking but kick open the door.
He's on the edge of his bed with a cloth pressed against the side of his head where Reis kicked him.
I stand in front of him, seething with anger. "You tricked her," I hiss through gritted teeth. "You sent her out into the forest at night, without any protection or means of defending herself."
He shrugs nonchalantly. "She was just a human. They're disposable."
My fists clench at my sides. "That's not for you to decide. She was under our protection, and you violated that trust. You put her life in danger, and for what? Your amusement?"
He sneers at me. "You're one to talk. What's the difference between what I did and the countless other humans you've used for your own gain?"
"Fuck you." I take a step closer to him, the anger in my voice growing. "The difference is that I don't lie to them or deceive them. They always know what I am. You, on the other hand, have no regard for anyone but yourself. You're nothing but a selfish, cruel bastard."
He laughs, but there's no humor in it. "You're just jealous because you're weak and powerless."
I shake my head. "Did you know a slaugh grabbed her?"
There was a tremor of a flinch, but he shrugged his shoulder. "Play with the forest and you get eaten."
I couldn't let him say another fucking word. My fist collided with his jaw and the crack vibrating through the room filled me with a fraction of satisfaction.
"You better fucking pray Reis returns soon,” I shout. "Cause I'm going to beat you until he does."
With that, I haul him upright, punching him in the gut, my mind set on putting an end to his dangerous games once and for all.
He doesn't fight back, but I don't fucking care. I want him to hurt.
