The dragon scuttles inside, jamming its wings on its back, and pebbles rain down from the ceiling.
My fingers close around a dry bone. Glancing up, I see the multiple grooves in the cave from where it has done this hundreds of times.
"Get back," I yell, brandishing the leg bone of some creature I found.
For a few seconds, it blinks at me, and when it moves closer, I strike its nose. It shakes its head and a deep rumble echoes in the cave.
Oh fuck, I think I made it mad.
It launches itself at me, knocking me down. Its teeth snap at my face as I scream and try to hold it back. But its too big, too strong.
My life flashes before my eyes and I gasp out a cry. I’ll never see my father again. My throat closes up. He probably will never know what happened to me and will spiral more than he has from Mom dying.
The dragon's eyes are cold as it opens its mouth, ready to feast on me.
I'm not ready to die yet and I know this could be my last chance. In a flash of adrenaline, I lunge forward and plunge the bone deep into the beast's neck.
Blood squirts from the wound and it roars, shaking the walls. It's talons scrape at the bone protruding like a thorn. But it's not enough to kill it. I've only pissed it off.
I take the opportunity to scramble away, wedging myself in a crevice at the side of the cave. My body trembles and the rough rock scrapes against my skin. The dragon's claws scratch against the rock, getting closer and closer, trying to reach me. My heart races as I try to push myself deeper into the crevice, but it's no use. I'm trapped. There's no escape.
I can feel the dragon's hot breath blast against my shirt. I close my eyes, trying to steady my breathing, but it's hard to ignore the panic rising in my chest at each sound of the dragon's claws digging into the rock, getting closer and closer to me.
I try to scream for help, but my voice is stuck in my throat. Who would help me anyway? I walked the woods for miles and never saw another person.
The dragon's clawed hand reaches into the crevice and I brace myself for the worst, but somehow, by some miracle, the dragon's claw misses me, and it lets out an angry roar.
It's only a matter of time before it crumbles the rock surrounding me enough to reach me.
I have to think of a way out. My arms are pinned and I can't move. For a few seconds, I try to wiggle deeper to feel for a loose rock or something to dig my way out, but I can't move my arms higher than my waist. A trail of sweat itches down my back.
The dragon roars again, its talons swiping so close to me that I can feel the tips of them and they slash the sleeve of my shirt.
Gasping out a cry, I try to squeeze in tighter, my heart racing. Tears spill down my face and I can't stop shaking.
I don't want to die.
CHAPTER6
THORNE
Iyawn as I lean against the wall next to Reis's bedroom door and adjust myself while I stand guard again. The woman has been mute the whole time since I had a couple of goblets of ale to quench my thirst. No doubt Reis's offer to help her has appeased her somewhat.
My cock twitches at the thought of her velvet-looking skin and plump breasts. I adjust myself and grunt, wishing Reis would hurry up for his shift.
I want to hunt. I want to taste the blood of a frightened beast I've killed. Anything to get my mind off the human inside and her writhing beneath me as I make her come while choking her... not to death as I thought I had back in the woods. Finding a human who looked too good to be true threw me off and I didn't control myself as I should have.
Then again, I wasn't expecting her to pass out so soon. I will have to be more careful next time.
Footsteps echo from around the corner, and I straighten, nodding to Reis as he comes into view.
"I'll take it from here," he says, then frowns. "Has she come out at all?"
"No." I rub my thumb across my mouth, making sure I don't have any telltale signs of ale froth on my lips.
"And she hasn't asked for anything to eat or drink?"
An odd sensation presses down on my stomach full of ale, and I shake my head.
