I frowned. “Vegas? You’re taking me to Vegas?”

He nodded slowly.

“So wearetaking a vacation.”

“Guess again.”

“There’s nothing in Vegas except casinos and wedding chapels. What? Are we going to gamble and then get married?”

“No, of course not.”

“Thank God.”

“We’re going to get married andthengamble.”

My jaw dropped open. “Excuse me? Married?”

He nodded like it was the most logical thing in the world.

“Care to share your thought process with me?”

“Later,” he stated. “When we’re on the plane. Come on, you should probably pack the clothes you have here. We can buy you what you need when we’re in Las Vegas.”

“Wait just a minute,” I seethed. “You can’t just tell me we’re getting married and expect me to—you didn’t even ask me!”

“Barrett, will you marry me?”

“Um. No.”

“Why not? I’d make a good husband.”

I started to laugh, hard enough that I felt it in my ribs and stomach. I laughed harder when he looked offended.

“You’re doing everything bass ackwards.”

“Bass ackwards?” he questioned.

“Ass backwards,” I clarified. “You’ve never heard that?”

He shook his head. “Doesn’t matter, we’re getting away from the marriage discussion.”

“There is no marriage discussion,” I stated.

“Why?” He asked it calmly, like he was genuinely confused about why I was refusing his proposal. “Do you love me, Barrett?”

I swallowed. We hadn’t spoken of love. “It’s too fast.”

“Do. You. Love. Me?”

“Yes.”

“And I love you.”

“You do?” I asked, feeling something inside of me softening.

“I do.”

“There’s more to this, isn’t there? This isn’t just about love?”
