“But—”

No longer in a placating mood, Flynn took me to bed.

“You’re kidding, right?” Ash asked, her eyes widening. “You eloped?”

I nodded. “Yep.”

“But why? You guys just started dating.”

I was cooped up in Flynn’s penthouse suite while he was off setting things up, things he wasn’t sharing with me yet, and I was left to face my best friend. Alone.

“Because we love each other,” I stated. “And we didn’t want to wait.”

“You guys don’t even live together.”

“We’re rectifying that,” I said. The rest of my clothes were in the process of finding drawers and closet space.

“You moved into Flynn’s hotel?”

“Just until we find an apartment,” I said. Flynn and I weren’t going to leave the hotel until Dolinsky was no longer a threat. Flynn felt my safety could be better managed in his hotel due to the number of security cameras and a suite that could only be accessed by a private elevator and key card.

“You’re happy,” she stated, her face still wearing a picture of shock.

Aside from a known mob boss at large and the FBI on my tail, yes, I was happy. “Very much.”

“This is the craziest thing you’ve ever done. Did you tell him? About the kid thing?”

I nodded. “He was okay with it.”

“For now, maybe. What if he changes his mind?”

“It’s one of my biggest fears—that Flynn is going to wake up one day and think about his lack of legacy and his mortality and decide he wants children. For now, he gets it, gets that kids aren’t for everyone and that they’re not for me. I hope he loves me enough not to resent me.”

Ash shook her head, striving to lighten the mood. “Enough with the serious talk. You just got married! Tell me everything. Don’t leave anything out.”

I faithfully recounted the details of my wedding, showing her my wedding band and the earrings Flynn had given me. She oohed and aahed like any woman who liked shiny, sparkly things. “I can’t believe you got married by Elvis. When the announcement hits the tabloids, they’re going to have a field day.”

I frowned. I hadn’t thought about that. Flynn was high-profile and in the limelight, and the fact that we’d eloped was probably more news than if we’d had a perfect society wedding.

My thoughts were disrupted by the arrival of my new husband. I didn’t think I’d ever get tired of him. I smiled as he came over to kiss me on the forehead.

Ash jumped up from her chair and came over to Flynn and hugged him. “I could kill you.”

Flynn gazed at her with a slight smile on his face. “Oh. Why?”

“Because I was supposed to be maid of honor at your wedding. You have denied me.”

“I am eternally in your debt. How can I repay it?”

“I get to help plan your wedding reception,” she said.

“We weren’t going to have a wedding reception,” I said before Flynn could say anything.

“We weren’t?” Flynn asked with a look in my direction. “I thought you wanted one.”

“Yeah, when things calm down,” I whispered. “Not now—”

“Of course you have to have a wedding reception.” Ash interrupted. “You married Flynn Campbell—and you did it in secret. It will be the party of the year.”
