“I can’t talk to you about this,” I stated.

“Why not?”

“Because we aren’t friends.”

“We could be,” Sasha said.

I smiled sadly. “You belong to Igor.”

“And you.”

“By extension. I don’t trust your loyalty. Whatever I say, how do I know you won’t go blabbing to Igor?”

His eyes were calm as they assessed me. “You don’t.”

“The only person I can trust is myself,” I said.

“You and Igor are similar in that regard, that’s for sure.”

“If you trust the wrong person, you’re dead.” I looked at him. “You’re not laughing.”

“It wasn’t funny.”

I sighed. “But it was the truth.”

“Yes.”

“I miss my life,” I said.

“Your old life, you mean? With Campbell?”

“I mean, my life before him. Everything used to be so…uncomplicated, so black and white.”

“Was it fulfilling?”

“It was—in its own right. But I hadn’t known what I was missing,” I explained. “Life changes on the flip of a coin. And there’s no use worrying about what I can’t control.”

“Do you want to be alone?” he asked.

“Yeah, I do,” I said with a nod. “Thanks, Sasha.”

He looked surprised. “For what?”

I shrugged. “For not being what you seem.”

Not knowing what to say to that, he nodded a few times and then shut my door, leaving me alone.

It was time to plan my strategy.

Chapter 44

After a fitful night’s sleep and a breakfast tray alone in my room, I was gifted with another surprise from Dolinsky. Four Scandinavian women arrived at the mansion prepared to give me a spa day. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the day I’d been kidnapped from The Rex Hotel and Spa a little over a month ago.

Had it already been that long?

The women flitted around me like a gaggle of geese, touching my hair and face and saying things in a language I didn’t understand. They pulled out their grooming devices and hairbrushes, and before I knew it, I was lathered and slathered. My hair needed a good cut, and my nails were rough and jagged. I nearly moaned in delight when I discovered I was getting a full-blown massage, too.

I hadn’t seen my two keepers since the ladies had arrived, but I figured they were out of the house, patrolling, and wanting to stay far away from girl-land.
