“I know. He brought you in. He’s still in the waiting room.”

“He hasn’t left?”

Flynn shook his head. “I don’t like him. But he took care of you. For that he’ll always have my appreciation.”

“I was trying to make amends,” I explained. “I don’t think it went over too well. He’s angry.”

“And hurt,” Flynn said. “He thought he was protecting you.”

“I’m not his to protect. But he is my friend and I hate that it all got so…”

“I know.” He squeezed my arm. “Let me go tell a nurse you’re awake.”

I smoothed down the covers of the bed, resting a protective hand over my stomach. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. It was my job to take care of the growing baby in my belly, and I hadn’t even done that well. The baby had been a surprise, a shock. I hadn’t wanted it, but I wanted it now.

Flynn returned, the doctor in tow. He was a middle-aged-man with a kind smile and tired brown eyes. Rotation must have gotten to him. “Mrs. Campbell, I’m Dr. Martin. How are you feeling?”

“Better.”

“Good. You almost had a miscarriage, but we stopped it. Acute stress brought this on. I’d like to keep you here over night just to monitor you and the baby.” He looked at Flynn. “Your job is to make sure she takes it easy.”

“Done,” Flynn said, shooting me a resolute look. “Bed rest it is. For the next month.”

“That’s a bit extreme,” I protested. “Don’t you think, Dr. Martin?”

“I agree with your husband. I think bed rest would be an excellent idea.”

“You’re all against me.” Leaning my head back against the pillows, I sighed. “Thanks, Doctor.”

“Glad you’re feeling better.” Dr. Martin nodded and then left.

“What am I going to do during a month on bed rest?” I demanded.

Flynn leaned over to kiss me on the forehead. “Let’s see. You still have to choose the color schemes for the new apartment.”

“Okay, that will be done in about five minutes.”

“Doubtful. You can’t even make up your mind.”

I rolled my eyes.

“And you can finish planning our wedding reception.”

“We’re not still doing that, are we?”

“Why wouldn’t we?”

“Because I’m pregnant.”

“So?”

“So, I got pregnant like a minute and a half after we got married.”

“And?”

I glowered. “I don’t think I’d be able to enjoy it—and it would turn into a baby party instead of being what it’s supposed to be.”

He smiled. “Okay.”
