“You got it.”

“You didn’t have to come back from Scotland,” I said to Ash.

She smiled. “Yes, I did. Malcolm and Duncan send their regards.”

“You’ve met Malcolm.” I grinned.

“I love that craggy, grumpy old man.”

“Me too,” I said.

“My brother sends his regards, too.”

I swallowed when I thought of Jack. Lacey returned with three glasses of water and handed me one, setting the other two on the coffee table. She took a seat in the chair next to the couch and crossed her ankles.

“How’s Jack?” I asked. “Flynn told me he was in the hospital waiting room.”

“He feels like shit,” Ash said. “He thinks he’s the reason you wound up in the hospital.”

“He’s not the reason. The doctor said I almost miscarried due to stress. I’ve been a bit frazzled lately.”

“Understatement,” Lacey said. “So, can I ask a question?”

“Yeah.”

“A personal question,” she clarified.

I squirmed but nodded.

“Flynn might’ve confided in me how you felt about children,” Lacey began. “How did you go from not wanting kids to wanting kids?”

“Oh, that is personal,” Ash said. “But I want to know the answer to that, too.”

“Knowing what you’re going to do when you’re hypothetically pregnant isn’t always the same as what you’re going to do when you’reactuallypregnant,” I said in an attempt to explain. “Besides, I don’t want kids. I wantFlynn’skids.”

“Kids plural?”

“Shut up, Ash.”

She grinned.

“Now, can I askyoua personal question?” I said with a glance at Lacey. “How long have you been sleeping with Brad?”

Lacey’s eyes widened. “How did you—”

“I paid a visit to The Fifteenth Floor one night not too long ago.”

“Did you tell Flynn?” she asked, the color high in her cheeks.

“No. It wasn’t my secret to tell.” I cocked my head to the side. “How long has it been going on?”

“Ah, it’s been brewing for a while,” Lacey admitted.

“Is it something serious or are you just scratching an itch?” I wondered. “I’m asking because Flynn counts on both of you, trusts both of you, and you’ve all worked together for years.”

Lacey remained quiet and I nodded.

There were some things you wanted to keep to yourself.
