“Can I go home?”

He blinked and then frowned. “But you’re winning.”

“Yeah, I know, but I was having fun and now Flynn’s gone and stuck me with a babysitter. That puts a damper on the evening.”

Brad’s severe face softened as he smiled. “Flynn was right.”

“About what?”

“You’re funny.”

Flynn talked about me? I liked that. I liked thata lot.

Chapter 13

I lifted the kitchen window to let in some fresh air. My landlord had prematurely turned on the heat, and it was stifling and humid in the apartment.

“Sure I can’t get you something to drink,” I called to Jack.

“Water, I guess. It’s freakin’ hot in here,” Jack answered.

I laughed and brought him a cold bottle of water. He sat on my couch, looking completely at ease, despite our subject of discussion.

“Campbell did a background check on you,” Jack said.

I took a seat next to him and tucked my feet underneath me. “Doesn’t surprise me.”

“No? Did he tell you he was going to do that?”

“No. But knowing Flynn…it’s not so shocking. Andrew was the only skeleton in my closet, but Flynn already knew about him. Obviously.”

“I did what you asked and looked into him, but I couldn’t find anything.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, everything is locked up tight. I couldn’t find out a damn thing about him. It’s like he doesn’t exist.”

Ripples of unease swept down my spine. “I don’t like that.”

“Yeah, I agree. I can hire someone—to dig into his past, but it will take some time to get results.”

Flynn wasn’t just a mystery, but a man who went out of his way to conceal his identity. Why? What was he hiding? What didn’t he want anyone to know?

“Barrett, you okay?” Jack asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Ash finally called me back,” he said, changing the subject. “She told me she broke up with John.”

“Oh, good.”

“Do you know why?”

“Sort of.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means, I know the excuse she gave me, but I think it runs deeper,” I said.
