“I’m walking you back to the main house.”
“I’ve got bear spray. Besides, if you walk back with me at this hour it’ll raise questions if anyone hears us.”
He raked a hand through his hair. “I don’t like that.”
“Tough.”
I kissed him one last time and then wiggled out of his embrace. I quietly trekked to the main house and took off my boots when I got to the front porch. The house was dark and I listened for sounds of movement.
There were none.
I shut the door quietly and then padded upstairs, grimacing when I forgot to avoid the squeaky stair.
When I got to the second floor, my grandmother’s bedroom door opened and I came face to face with her.
We stared at one another but neither of us said a word. She looked me up and down and then she walked past me to the hall bathroom, like I wasn’t even there.
I went into my bedroom and shut the door. I stripped out of Declan’s clothes and shoved them into the back of my closet and then changed into my own pajamas. I climbed into bed and pulled the covers up to my neck.
My phone was resting on the nightstand, and it lit up with a text but didn’t vibrate because I’d put it on silent. I grabbed it and opened the screen.
Declan
Good night, bear snack.
I set my phone back on the nightstand.
“Crap.”

The Ranch

My face was smushed into the pillow when I cracked an eye open.
“Morning, sunshine,” Muddy greeted from the chair in the corner of my bedroom. She was crocheting, but she looked up from her needle.
“What time is it?” I asked, still refusing to move.
“A little after eight. Thought I’d let you sleep in, what with your late night out. Or early morning.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Waiting for you to wake up so we can talk.”
“Talk.” I closed my mouth and squeezed my eyes shut. “What do you want to talk about?”
“Declan texted Connor early this morning about the foal’s birth,” she said. “He said you helped him.”
“Yeah,” I said carefully. “I woke up last night and had a feeling Mirabelle was going to go into labor. I went to the barn and sure enough, she was antsy.”
“And the birth went fine. No complications?”
“None.” I frowned and finally sat up. “Where’s Dad?”
“With Dr. Swanson. She came out to check out Mirabelle and the foal.”
