She splutters. "No … I-I … n-no."
"Bullshit. You think that just because you're the self-appointed leader of this resistance and the strongest fae in your ranks, that you're capable. You think Gaia would have fought to have her reincarnated if she could make do with you?" I scoff and get up, my chair falling backwards with the force. I rest on my hands and lean in closer to her. "If you were the best option for this realm, Lana wouldn’t be here."
As she goes to retort, the doors fly open and a male fae stands in the entrance, panting as he catches his breath. "Sister, come quickly. Prisoners from the dark castle just arrived.” His voice cracks as he gathers his composure. "Sera … Sera is here."
Chapter Twenty-Two
Lana
Doc … no.
Tears fall down my cheeks as I rage and scream. "I will fucking kill you, Sebastian!"
The mage and I reach him at the same time and a sliver of fear creeps into his eyes, his confidence deflating. The predator in me delights at that.
He blocks my fist with his forearm but hisses as the teal flames flare and sear his flesh. His hand flies to his face and he throws up a black barrier which the mage quickly calls out his ice chants. Sebastian sneers at us but falters as his protective barrier freezes. The mage slams his palm into it, shattering it to pieces.
You can't hide from us.
He grabs Sebastian by the neck, squeezing far harder than I would have expected him to be able to after barely being brought back from the brink of death. As Sebastian lifts his hands to attack, the mage slams him into the nearest wall, grabbing him by the hair and bashing the burnt side of his face into the wall until the stone coats in his blood, his arms hanging loosely as the fight leaves him.
Two guards stir on the ground and I whirl around to shoot two more bolts at them.
The sound of approaching feet echo in the hallway, alerting us to more guards. I turn to the mage. "If you kill Sebastian, will you have accomplished what you needed to do here?"
I need to know if I'm going to be on my own after this.
He looks at me with malice in his eyes, pausing in his beating of Sebastian. "I won't be done until Anshar is dead."
I smile wickedly at that, ecstatic that I have someone with me. "Let me take the lead on that. My mate is stuck in the same body and I need to separate them before we can banish Anshar." His eyes widen at the steel in my voice as he nods. "I want that fucker dead too but I refuse to let anyone kill him before I get my mate back. Do not cross me."
We both focus back on Sebastian, the mage leaning his face close to Sebastian's as he spits at him. "You have taken far too much from this realm. You have taken countless lives. You have raped hundreds of women. You have abused me for forty years, keeping me alive just enough to use my magic for your twisted needs, poisoning me with your dark powers."
I move around them and construct a barrier in the doorway as the guards fill the space, leading to the dungeon. They bang against the obstruction with their swords. Why aren’t they using the magic against it?
Do they make their guards ingest the poison too?
The mage's voice pulls me back towards them. "You will take no more, from anyone." He takes Sebastian's head in his hands, about to dole out the same death that Sebastian gave Doc.
Sebastian roars to life and butts the mage with his head, sending a jolt of black energy into my barrier at the same time, causing a crack to run through where it hits. His guards are swift to fixate on that, hitting the crack with the butt of their weapons, breaking it. I feel my energy draining as they rush towards me.
I still don’t have access to my full limit and my body is starting to feel the drain. On unsteady feet, I back away into a corner, knowing I only have a fighting chance if I only have to take them on from one direction. My eyes dart to the mage jumping to his feet to face Sebastian head on, who now prowls towards him, before my line of sight is cut off by swarms of guards rushing me.
They hesitate, no one making a move towards me as if I'm a rabid animal they’re scared to set off.
They aren't wrong. It's them or me and I'll be damned if I get taken alive.
My limbs feel unbearably heavy from the fatigue starting to set in but I force myself to move into a fighting stance. Feet spread apart, bouncing lightly on the balls of my feet as Raven taught me, I’m ready to move in whatever direction needed to dodge an attack.
Lifting my palms, I guide my energy to them and a teal orb forms in my left hand, a silver orb forming in my right.
Let's fucking go, nitwits.
The energy pulsates through my hands and I decide I'm tired of being on the defense and waiting for an attack. Lifting my hands, I let the orbs burst towards the guards, one after another, grunting with the exertion it takes.
Taking note of how the silver stuns them in their spot and how the teal engulfs them in flames, I begin a dance of the two. Stunning the guards one by one with my right hand, I follow up with my left and watch them drop to the floor like flies.
Fucking badass.
