Giving in to instinct, I picture myself running over the rubble of the bricks and punching Anshar in the fucking face.

He drops to his knees, my vision showing us staring at the ground now as he breathes heavily, seething."Do you not know how to die and fucking stay dead, human?"

"For once, I don't have time to fight with you. If you care about Lana at all, you need to get us back to your castle.Now."

"Why would I listen to you? I have a job to do or we both die. Permanently."

"Shut the fuck up and listen! Something has happened to her. When I was floating in the void, I felt her soul call out. She was close to me and that means something bad has happened to her."

"Why would I not feel that if it were true as our souls are also entwined?"

"That's because you aren't her fucking mate, you psychopath. When are you going to realize that? You might have forced a tether to her soul but it will never call out for you like it did for me."

I let my own words sink in. I’m her mate.Iam her mate. I might not have been in their life before but in this life, I am. Our souls chose each other.

"Do not dare act like you are above me, human scum."

I decide a little poking and prodding is warranted in this situation or he’ll never get his ass in gear. "Why are you so against going back to your castle then? Are you so afraid of me being right and seeing for yourself that the pathetic human means more to her than you?"

He growls low in our throat, our vision turning to look back at the city,"If you are lying, just know that you'll never get her back. Erebus will make sure our souls are damned and he will control this body as a shadowslave."

"I'm not lying. Every moment you waste arguing and questioning my intentions is a moment longer than Lana has. What if Sebastian has her? We both know he wants your position and he will take whatever he wants in your absence, including her."

"That fucking gnat will be dealt with permanently, if that is the case. I had leniency before because I thought I needed him to keep the rest of the dark fae in line but I will kill anyone who lays a finger on her."

Wow, is this actually working? Does he truly care about her or is he just angry at the thought of his toy being used?

I need answers while he’s in a generous, sharing mood.

"Does that include the dark god? I heard him say he wanted her power."

He spits back, speaking aloud now as he stands back up, creating a black and purple swirling portal. "I have no intention of letting him have her."

With those words, he steps through the portal and my vision fades to black before it comes back as we appear in the dungeon. There's a large chunk of the wall missing and a gentle breeze blows a piece of dark hair into my line of vision.

Sebastian leans over a figure in the corner, the guards dragging fallen bodies away that seemed to have piled up around the prone figure.

Anshar calls out. "What happened?"

The room freezes, silence so deafening descending that you could hear a pin drop. Sebastian turns on his heels to face us, his nose broken and his face painted in blood.

"Your pet happened," he spits, stepping to the side to show Lana's body, bloodied and bruised. I barely see a rise and fall of her body and my soul chills over with panic.

"They will pay for this."

All hell breaks loose.

I can barely keep up with what he's doing as flashes of black and purple flare out, bodies falling in his wake as he makes his way towards Lana, there in front of her in only minutes. Before I can gather my thoughts, we’re the only people left in the room—Sebastian, Lana, and us.

Sebastian must see his life flash before his eyes because he drops to the ground, pulling a small knife from his boot and holding it to her throat, sneering at us, "Let me leave or she dies."

"How about you drop the knife and I'll make your death swift. Or would you rather I pull your intestines from your stomach and make you choke on your own bowels?"

Sebastian lifts her body with one arm, using it as a shield, keeping the knife to her throat at all times.

I speak into our mind."Do you have any way of taking him out without hurting her?"

A moment of silence before he responds reluctantly."No."
