“And then the third soul, Lux, has hitched a ride onto that. However, I can see why you’d be confused. It was easier for her to exist with taking over the wolf half of you. You do not control it as intimately as you do yourself. Your wolf allowed her to slide into the driver seat, so to speak.”
I suppose that would explain a lot.
How are you taking this in so rationally and calmly? My mind is fucking blown.
We knew our connection was different from the others, and you didn’t fight me for long without knowing any better. You lived a sheltered life, not knowing much about the shift. You thought it was normal to have two independent thought processes. And with my own memories only returning over time as they were knocked loose, I didn’t put it together.
“As long as you are certain this won’t harm them,” Selene cautioned, eyes harder than I’d ever seen them as she looked at Psyche. “Please continue.”
I told you she cared for you. Look at the way she just discretely threatened Psyche.
Excitement sparked within me as Psyche reached towards me once more, her hand glowing as it approached my chest.
Lux, I—
My final internal thought to her was cut off as I felt a tearing in my chest, like a layer of my skin was being ripped off. A small scream came from me and I heard Selene yell as she stood in my peripheral.
“It’s okay,” Psyche calmly told us both and just a moment later, I saw a twinkling light in her palm. Sagging against the back of the couch, feeling as if I’d just run a marathon, I watched her cradle it within both hands now, bringing it to her mouth and softly blowing.
It was astonishing, watching her literally breathe life back into the soul as it turned to particles that traveled a few feet away. They grew and grew, spinning in a frenzy of light that turned into the outline of a small woman at first, steadily materializing with each moment that passed.
And suddenly there was the woman that had helped me through the toughest times of my life, smiling at me as tears streamed down her face.
I was incapable of moving at first, taking in her appearance. Her raven was pin straight and to her waist, perfectly contrasting her pale skin, much like Selene’s coloring. Somehow, she perfectly matched what I would have imagined for her. A whole lot of attitude in a small body, a face full of sharp features that said ‘don’t fuck with me,’ and warm chocolate eyes that served as a softer juxtaposition to the rest of her. Within them held so much affection and I found myself hurtling from my seat to pull her into my embrace.
“Lux,” I cried, this moment feeling too surreal, and I worried if I blinked, that she would be gone and I would be alone here.
“You’re such an emotional sap,” she joked, but I could feel her own tears dropping onto my chest, showing she was very much still crying. However, her banter made me laugh and pull back enough to stare at her in awe.
“You’re really here.”
She smiled, tipping her head up a bit to look at me in such close proximity. “I really am.”
“How was I not able to sense Lux during Kira’s previous visits?” Selene asked, voicing the question that had been plaguing me awhile now.
I moved to Lux’s side, reaching to hold her hand as we waited to hear Psyche’s answer. She squeezed it back, and selfishly I was happy she was letting me show so much affection. I didn’t want to let go of her in fear she’d disappear. I knew she was here, but my mind wasn’t ready to accept that things would go my way for once, waiting for the other shoe to drop and to get shit on, so to speak.
Psyche was reclined back into her corner, her arms resting on the top of the couch. “Was your physical body still in your own plane?”
After nodding my answer, she chirped back. “Easy, then. As I said, she took the lead of your wolf’s soul, which was still very much attached to your physical form. Now that your physical body didn’t exist, she shifted to traveling with you, no vessel to ground herself to anymore.”
Whispering out of the corner of my mouth, I poked at her, “I knew you liked me, you sassy bitch."
She scoffed, rolling her eyes in faux annoyance. “As if.”
Psyche moved to lightly clap her hands onto her knees before pushing to stand. “Looks like my work here is done, ladies. I hope to see you again soon.”
I was going to thank her for her assistance, but she was gone in the blink of an eye, leaving as my mouth opened to speak.
“May I have a word with you, Selene?” Lux asked, the softest I’d ever heard her tone, making me side-eye her.
“Of course,” the Goddess replied, gesturing for her to take a seat on the couch.
Lux turned to me, eyes pleading, “Kira, can I talk to her alone for just a moment?”
At first I felt hurt by the question. We had been together for so long that the thought of her not wanting me around stung like being stabbed again, but I quickly snapped from it, knowing she deserved her privacy.
Letting go of her hand, I turned to walk outside, sitting on the lower steps of the temple, looking at the details of the moon that sat in the sky so close it still took my breath away despite seeing it multiple times now.
