I don’t let him finish.

My finger squeezes the trigger, and a single shot rings out, clean through his forehead.

Trent slumps, lifeless, the phone clattering to the ground.

I stare at him for a moment, my anger cooling into a grim satisfaction. Billie’s safe now. The man who controlled him, who put his life in danger, is gone.

I holster my Glock and walk back to the warehouse, my boots steady on the gravel, the weight of the mission lifting.

Cole and Connor are waiting inside, checking the bodies, securing the scene.

“Trent?” Cole asks, his eyes sharp.

“Done,” I say, my voice flat. “Mission complete.”

Connor nods, clapping my shoulder.

“Clean work, brother,” Connor says. “Let’s move.”

We sweep the warehouse one last time, ensuring no surprises, then slip out the back, fading into the district’s shadows as Mr. G’s team handles cleanup.

The deed is done, the threat to Billie gone forever.

I’m coming back to Billie, just like I promised, and that playroom, those dogs, that life we dreamed about—it’s closer than ever.

Chapter 25

Billie

I’m pacing the penthouse living area, my bare feet slapping against the polished wood floor, Felix clutched tight under my arm.

The city skyline glitters through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but it’s doing nothing to calm the knot in my stomach.

Max’s out there with Cole and Connor, taking on Trent and the Varkov men, and every second that ticks by without word from him feels like a lifetime.

Luke and Richie are sprawled on the plush rug, their stuffies propped up beside them, but their usual giggles are subdued, their eyes flicking to the clock just like mine.

We’re all nervous.

We’re waiting for our Daddies.

The silence is heavy, like the air before a storm.

Luke looks up, his blonde bangs swaying a little as he hugs his stuffy.

“I still get nervous when Connor’s on a mission,” Luke says, his voice soft but steady. “Like, my tummy does flips, and I keep thinking what if something goes wrong? But he’s a Guard. He’s the toughest, smartest, most brilliant man ever. Healwayscomes back.”

Richie nods, his dark curls bouncing as he squeezes Fizz.

“Yup. Same with Cole,” Richie smiles. “I worry every time, but I trust him. I mean, come on, they’re Guards! They’re like superheroes, right? No one’s tougher.”

Richie flashes a broader smile, and I can see the faith in his eyes, the kind of trust that comes from knowing their Daddies are unstoppable.

Their words sink in, and I feel a tiny spark of hope, like a light flickering in the dark.

“You’re right,” I say, pausing my pacing to sit cross-legged beside them, Felix in my lap. “Max’s the same. He’s all serious and grumbly, but he’s so strong, and he promised he’d come back. I trust him too.”

My voice wavers just a little bit, but saying it out loud helps, like I’m borrowing some of their confidence. I think of Max’s steady hands, his warm kisses, the way he makes me feel safe no matter what.
