I ignore the interruption and continue, “looking for your mate. Why settle for me?”

A scowl darkens both of their faces, Castle even flashing his fangs at me when he growls, and the sharp sting of his displeasure is like a shock to my system. But it’s Tobias who surges to his feet and confronts me. He cups the back of my neck and drags me closer until his forehead is pressed against mine, blocking out everything but him.

“Wolves never settle. Our human sides might find a woman to fuck every once in a while, but our wolves never take an interest in anyone but our mates.” His blue eyes shimmer with promise and so much hope that my throat aches.

I can’t imagine living so long, always searching for a mate, only to be disappointed time and time again.

Forever alone.

It would be a living nightmare, one of unrelenting pain and torment.

“What if you’re wrong?” I ask, my voice hoarse, wanting what he offers so badly that it feels like someone is carving out my insides. To have a family of my own would be everything.

It’s ironic that I’m only getting the chance for my dreams to come true until after death.

But maybe there’s a reason for that.

Maybe I had to die and be reborn to become one of them—a big enough monster that I could keep them safe.

“Impossible,” Tobias blusters in a gruff tone, shooting me a cocky grin. The heart-stopping smile is enough to rob me of breath and render me mute. His amusement fades, and he cups my face, his thumbs brushing against my cheekbones in a caress that makes me go all shivery. “Our wolves don’t like female companionship, vanishing completely from our minds like they’re trying to escape. But not with you. Never with you. My wolf is pressing under my skin, trying to get to you, chanting one thing over and over in my head—mate.”

A spark heats my blood at his possessiveness, and my fangs lengthen with the need to claim him for my own. My heart picks up speed at his nearness, venom flooding my mouth with cinnamon, and I suddenly have an overwhelming craving for his blood.

Almost like the darkness lying dormant in my chest is urging me to finish the bond, like he is a part of our soul and we won’t be complete without him.

He tugs me forward, cuddling me against his chest, and my face settles into the crook of his neck—right against temptation. He twists his head, once again offering his throat in a silent plea. His pulse flutters wildly in excitement, and I lean forward, sucking at the delicious skin exposed.

A guttural groan rumbles in his chest, almost like his beast is trying to speak to me. His grip tightens, pulling me closer, and his cock twitches where it’s pressed against my stomach. I suck harder, my thighs tightening, and I squirm, trying to appease the ache that has taken up residence in my core. When I clench around nothing, a whimper escapes me.

He goes rigid in my arms, a fierce growl splitting the air that has me on the very edge of an earth-shattering orgasm.

Only it hovers frustratingly out of reach.

The fucker doesn’t play fair, knowing exactly what his growl does to me, but I no longer care.

I rub against his cock and give in to temptation, sinking my fangs deep into his neck. Rich blood spills into my mouth, so full of power that it thrums through my body and sets off my orgasm.

His blood sings in my veins, and I can understand why vampires would hunt shifters—he is absolutely fucking delicious. The darkness drinks him down like a sponge, the image so disturbing, my fangs instantly retract. I jerk away from Tobias, my fear so potent that it feels like someone is trying to strangle me.

I frantically search his face, terrified I’ll find myself holding nothing more than a corpse. I’m trembling so hard that my bones ache.

Strong hands cup my face, forcing me to look directly into Tobias’ deep blue eyes.

A very alive Tobias.

I flinch back, afraid just being near him will harm him, but his hold remains firm as he drags me close once again. “I’m fine. You didn’t harm me.”

I give a watery laugh, not believing it for a second. “Liar.”

When I try to pull back again, his grip becomes bruising, and he scowls down at me, his voice all growly. “I would never lie to you, and I’m a little insulted that you think otherwise. Having you drink my blood is an honor. I love feeling your fangs in my neck.”

I go all shivery at his comment. I don’t get a chance to say anything before he twists his hands in my hair, wrapping the strands around his fists, drawing me closer and closer, only stopping when our mouths are so close that I can feel his breath on my lips. “Your bite is an aphrodisiac. I would never allow you to go too far, because I know it would hurt you, and that’s the last thing I would allow. I’m a shifter, which means it takes a lot to harm one of us. If you’re worried, Castle will keep watch and ensure you don’t take too much.”

Before I can worry about my mate watching me feed from another man, Tobias turns his head, displaying the puncture marks on his neck like a badge of honor. Much to my relief, his neck wasn’t savaged or chewed to shreds. I’m leaning closer for a better view when he suddenly turns to face me, taking me by surprise.

His blue eyes glow brightly as his beast rides him hard, and he gives me a very wolfish grin. “My turn. Let me show you that we’re meant to be together.”

He pulls me close with his grip on my hair, the distance between us almost painful, and my skin aches to have him touch me again. As if sensing my need, he reaches back and grabs his shirt, then pulls it over his head in a sexy move that only guys can pull off, and my heart rattles in my chest. My gaze automatically drops to his chest, and it’s a good thing that I don’t need to breathe often, or I would be in peril of swallowing my tongue.
