“Fine. Got it!” I said, then accidentally hung up on my best friend without saying goodbye. I sent him a text to say sorry, and that we would talk later.
I pressed my index fingers to my thumbs, closed my eyes, took in a deep breath, and let it out slowly, visualizing everything I wanted. Feeling myself in that situation. Believing it was going to happen.
Thirty seconds later, my phone rang with a call from Jeremy.
“That was a coincidence, not a sign,” I mumbled to myself, shaking my head in amusement. I took another deep breath, then answered the call.
“Hey, Jeremy,” I said. “What’s going on?”
“Lucas!” he said. “Just checking in to see if you had questions about the offer or production schedule.”
“The offer and contract look good, but I didn’t get a production schedule,” I said. “I’d be curious to see what that looks like.”
“That’s odd,” Jeremy said. “I’ll have my assistant send it again, but basically, you’re looking at eight weeks. Keep in mind the shooting days are long, typically between twelve and fourteen hours. Don’t let that scare you, though. You get plenty of breaks. I promise, we won’t work you to death. Plus, remember, it’s only eight weeks. You’ll survive.”
“I’m okay with the long workdays, but what exactly is eight weeks?” I asked. “That’s the part I’m confused about.”
“That’s the entire length of the production. We shoot two entire seasons in eight weeks.”
“Are you serious?” I shot out of my chair, my mouth hanging open. “So, I don’t have to move to New York?”
“No!” he said, chuckling. “Not if you don’t want to. We’ve got a few people who fly in for the shoot from LA, then head back home when we wrap. One of our producers lives in Virginia.”
I closed my eyes, practically on the verge of tears.
Tears of happiness. Tears of relief.
Rolando was going to have a field day with this one.
He would take all the credit.
“This is the best news ever,” I said. “I was going crazy over here, thinking I had to choose between Zoe and New York.”
“Well, I certainly apologize for that,” Jeremy said. “That was clearly our fault, since it was explained in the production schedule that you did not receive. Think of your time with the show as an extended eight-week vacation in the Big Apple that you’re getting paid handsomely for. You can still live in California. In fact, bring Zoe with you to New York. Lord knows the suite that’s included in your contract is big enough. Totally up to you.”
“I’m in!” I embarrassingly yelled into his ear with more unbridled joy than I’d had in my entire life, my heart racing with excitement. “You can expect the signed contract in the next five minutes.”
“Fantastic!” Jeremy said with almost as much enthusiasm as me. “We’ll be watching for it.”
Ending the call, I set my phone down on the desk, barely being able to contain my thoughts, my emotions, my excitement, and my relief. I even did a silly little dance of euphoria. Luckily, nobody saw me as I pumped my fist in the air and bumped into my printer, accidentally unplugging it.
I sat back down in my chair and logged into my computer, quickly signing and submitting the E-contract in my inbox. After I received the confirmation that Jeremy had received it, I leaned back in my chair and let out a relieved breath. A tremendous weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
This was the job of my dreams, and I had landed it. Not only that, I didn’t have to move to New York. And the best part, Zoe and I would be together.
I got the best of both worlds!
This was more than I could’ve asked for.
The only thing left was to share the news with Zoe.
I picked up my phone, my fingers trembling with excitement to call Zoe, but then I stopped, thinking that maybe I needed to do something special for her.
We needed to celebrate, and I had just the plan. Instead of calling her, I would send Zoe a text, not revealing any information at all about what had happened with Jeremy. If she asked questions, I needed to avoid answering them. This was going to be the best surprise ever.
Me:Can you come over at 8? We should talk.
Zoe:Did you decide?
