Shame flared through me, remembering the morning when things came to a head. “You yelled at me for a simple mistake, Dylan.”

He sniffed, his eyes going even sadder. “I know, baby. I fucked that up, bad. There’s no excuse. I’m stressed, but I shouldn’t take that out on you. I’m so sorry.”

“You need to stop lying to me when things aren’t going well for you,” I said. “How was I supposed to know you were struggling? All you did was tell me how much we had to love Ohio and that I was whining.”

He squeezed his eyes shut. “That was unfair to you, Jeannie. I’m so sorry.”

“Thank you.”

“But I have a plan.”

My laugh was watery and I swiped under my nose. “A plan, huh?”

“A plan.”

I quirked an eyebrow. “What does this plan entail?”

“I’m going to put us back together again.” I eyed him skeptically. “I know it’s probably hard to believe it’ll be different, and it’s not going to be easy,” he said. “We’ve both got to be in. Are you in? Will you let me try to make it up to you?”

His face went serious, warm brown eyes searching mine. I slumped down onto my bare foot, even shorter than him then.

“J,” he whispered. “Please. I know this is my fault. I saw you struggling and I just tried to carry us through it. But when I couldn’t . . . it took me right back to when we lost.”

“I didn’t want you to carry me, Dylan. I just wantedyou. All I ever want is you, and you left me.”

Dylan’s eyes went glassy, his breath stilted. “I needed you too, J. I didn’t know how to say it, but I needed you. You’re all I want too. Please work on this with me.”

I ran my thumb over his cheek and cracked a smile. “What’s the first step of the plan?”

He pinched his lips together, grabbing my ass to lift me against the door to my squeak. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“I think you don’t have a plan,” I teased. “Or the plan involves a lot of orgasms.”

He laughed. “I mean, there will be sex, but it’s notallsex.”

“Good. Because even though that’s good, it doesn’t fix everything.”

“I know. But it feels pretty good, right?” I giggled and he leaned into me, tugging my earlobe into his mouth. I let out a deep sigh before he snarled in my ear. “You like this, don’t you? This little cat-and-mouse game? You wanted me to chase you across the country and fall at your damn feet. I bet you didn’t think I’d do it. But I’m here, Jeannie. I’d chase you fucking anywhere, and crawl through whatever mud you want, because I don’t have a life without you in it.”

“I missed you so much, Dylan,” I whimpered, a chill zipping down my arms. “I need you.”

And then his lips were on mine. Desperate, ferocious kisses. Firm and gripping, then loose and sloppy. Taking every part of him and giving him every part of me. My legs curled around his waist as I writhed against him. He rocked back into me, the door creaking with every thrust against me.

“Dyl,” I admonished him against his lips. “They’ll hear.”

“Oh, he’s gonna hear it,” Dylan growled, pulling out of our kiss. “I can’t let you stay here and have your little Hallmark movie moment where the single mom comes to her small-town farm and falls in love with her brother’s best friend because her big-city boyfriend is mean.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Oh, you’re not?”

“No way. The villain’s getting the girl this time.”

I made a shocked expression, bringing my hands to my cheeks. “Oh no, the villain’s going to get me! Whatever shall I do?”

“Run,” Dylan hissed in my ear to my giggle. “Just kidding, we can’t do that here.”

I smirked. “The villain’s gonna have to work for it. Andy would make a pretty nice brother’s best friend hero—eep!” I squeaked when he spanked me with a grin.

“Shut your sassy cocktail waitress mouth and let me show you how the bad guy does it.” He plopped my feet to the ground and lowered to his knees.
