“I can’t. Look, things are a bit hectic,” she said, hoping to dissuade him.
“Is your boyfriend visiting?” He asked in a growl and she wondered why he would assume her boyfriend’s visit to be the reason for her not being free.
Kalilah swallowed her indignation and gritted her teeth.
“No, not that it’s any of your business but I just want to spend time with my sister.”
That stopped him short.
“Oh, how is Kaiya doing, anyway? We have a meeting soon.”
She remembered suddenly that Kaiya and Finn were dance school hunting.
“She’s doing fine.”
“Who is that?” Kaiya called out from the bathroom door where she had gone to freshen up after they had come into the apartment.
Kalilah told her it was Finn.
“Tell him I said hi,” Kaiya said before going to her bag to pull out the blue dress she’d bought for their supper date tonight.
“I’m not a messenger,” she tossed back at her sister.
“Hello?” Finn said, his tone uncertain and she’d almost forgotten he was still on the call.
“I’m still here.”
“So, supper tonight?”
Typical male, pretending like he hadn’t heard a word she’d said – or was he secretly hoping to make her resolve waver?
“I can’t tonight, Finn.” The next thing she heard was a click.
Kaiya’s phone began ringing from across the room. Her sister glanced at the screen with a mischievous look before she said.
“It’s Finn.” She lifted the phone up to her ear. “Hello,” she started tentatively, and two seconds into the call and she was giggling. Finn made her sister laugh? Just great. She’d been trying to make Kaiya laugh all day but hadn’t succeeded, and now she was chuckling at whatever Finn was saying. He wasn’t even that funny in her opinion.
She tried to ignore Kaiya’s side of the conversation by scrolling through Instagram. Kalilah could still hear her sister’s laughter and it annoyed her. She slumped on the bed in exhaustion, thoroughly disgusted at the ways that man got to her without even trying.
“Here,” the voice jolted her from indignant thoughts. Kaiya leaned over her, offering the phone.
“What do you want Finn?”
“You. Us,” his tone was serious. “But I know you’re not ready for that yet.” He placed emphasis on yet. “Anyway, your sister doesn’t mind if I hang out with you girls tonight.” He sounded smug.
Of course Finn would find a way to charm his way in. The man had two ways of getting what he wanted: Either muscle, as in by sheer force of will and strategic planning, or by turning on the charm. Something few people could resist, and her sister obviously couldn’t either. She explained to him that it was an all-girls affair and that she didn’t want him there.
“Well, I’ve been invited,” he said in a calm manner that made her want to hurl the phone at the nearest hard surface.Good God!How had she gone from saying no to wanting to tear her own hair out?
“You’re a good actor, I’m sure you can come up with an excuse to not make it. So un-invite yourself,” she hissed in a low tone. She didn’t want her sister hearing her.
“Don’t be mean, Kalilah, I already said he could come!” Kaiya piped from across the room, loud enough for Finn to overhear it.
“I’ll meet you girls in the hotel lobby,” he replied confidently, and rang off before she could say anything else.
Kalilah hurled the phone at the bed, with enough force to make it bounce, before falling back.
She looked up at her sister’s quirked eyebrow and wanted to throttle her for inviting him.
