“So, tell me how much you’re going to miss me when I’m gone.”
She looked up when Guy dropped those teasing words, and she felt her good mood slightly dissipate. “I know it’s a great promotion, and I’m so happy for you, babe,” she said slowly. “But yeah, I’m going to miss you a whole lot. You’ve been like my brother, best friend, backup date, bodyguard…”
“Hey, it’s not like I’m going to die or anything. I’m just moving a few hours away,” cut in Guy with a nervous laugh. But Sheri could tell he, too, was a bit emotional. They’d never been apart for long and definitely not on different coasts.
Just then, she saw his gaze shift to some point beyond her shoulder, his light gaze sharpening. “Turn around, Sheri. The most fine-ass girl just walked in the door and damn if I don’t want to make her all mine.”
“You say that about every girl you…” began Sheri in exasperation, but she looked over her shoulder anyway. Sure enough, a very eye-catching brunette had appeared, wearing a flattering knee-length black dress and matching heels. She looked like a supermodel, with her flawless makeup, svelte, tall figure, and confident aura despite her youthful features. Something about her seemed familiar, and Sheri tried to place why. Now where have I seen her before?
“Oh, shit,” she suddenly breathed.
“What’s wrong?” Guy asked in concern when he saw Sheri’s face, only for him to lift his head and his eyes widen as he said, “Oh, shit. Isn’t that your boss?”
The stunning brunette had turned slightly as a male figure came through the door soon after her, and it was obvious they were together from the way she smiled at him. Both Sheri and Guy were staring at the man who’d walked in, their mutual looks of shock almost comical as they shared a glance.
“Quick, don’t let him notice us,” gasped Sheri, almost squirming in her seat as she turned her back on the striking couple. Guy smirked knowingly.
“Why, what’s wrong? Surely it’s not a crime to be having dinner in the same restaurant as your lofty CEO boss.”
“It’s not that! It’s just, we’ve never run into each other outside work before,” she muttered, biting on her lip. “You could hardly say we move in the same social strata.”
“Obviously, that’s become an inaccurate assumption. Anyway, he’ll be walking right past us in a few seconds,” came Guy’s nonchalant warning as he picked up his wine to drink.
She felt ready to faint. Dammit, where was a hole in the ground to sink into when you needed one? She only prayed Dean wouldn’t notice her, but of course, the fates were never so magnanimous.
“Miss Wilson,” said Dean Cooper’s deep voice, flecked with surprise.
Sheri slapped on a smile and looked up with wide eyes. “Oh, Mr. Cooper! Fancy running into you here.” He stood there with his arm linked with his date’s, whom Sheri now recognized as the very in-demand British fashion model Elle Granger. She also happened to be Dean’s current flame, if Sheri could even call it that.
“I must say I never expected to see you out on a date,” he said, barely flicking his eyes in Guy’s direction. “Especially, since you gave me no clue you had a boyfriend.”
“Oh, Guy is…”
“Pleased to meet you,” cut in Guy, before Sheri could finish. He lunged an arm forward to shake Dean’s hand. “You must be Sheri’s boss.”
Any response Dean could have was interrupted by Elle, who tugged on his arm, pouting. “Why don’t we let them enjoy their date, honey, and continue ours? I’m famished.”
“Yes, Mr. Cooper, I’d hate to keep you from your beautiful date,” said Sheri, her smile light and courteous. Elle barely acknowledged the polite smile and compliment, all but yanking Dean away.
Sheri’s breath escaped in a rush once she knew Dean and his date were out of earshot. She looked up and caught Guy’s half-concealed glee.
“What on earth was that?” Guy let out, barely holding back a chortle. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think Mr. Bossman was jealous seeing me and you together.”
“As if,” Sheri groaned.
“Come on, Sheri, just the look on his face said volumes!” he said in a hushed tone while his evil grin was in place. “I didn’t know his company had a ‘no dating’ policy.”
“Don’t be silly! Of course, I’m allowed to date. For goodness’ sake, he was probably just in shock,” came her exasperated reply. “I’ve never spoken about a love life or even a social one. I’m all about work, and he must have never imagined I’d have time for a classy meal out.”
