“Grant…”

He stared then down at the metal table and said nothing. She asked him a question and he didn’t respond. She asked another and still there was radio silence. Maybe she needed to wait, she thought, give him a day or two and then come back.

She got up then and left. She’d heard enough anyway. Enough for one day. She threw the remnants of her sandwich into the bin outside the room and walked up the stairs back to where everyone had been watching.

Opening the door with a sigh and then she froze, her foot half on the step still.

Cole met her eyes head on and she swallowed. Fuck, she thought. He’d literally been there, watching, listening, for god knows how long.

“Maddie.” Brandon called her ignoring the look on his cousin’s face.

She looked away, away from him, and across to everyone else in the room.

“Give him a few days and he might talk some more.” She said and Brandon nodded.

“You did good.” Brandon said.

She shook her head. “I’m not sure about that.” She muttered. She suddenly felt exhausted and after being in that room with him, she wanted a shower again.

“Go home. All three of you. Get some sleep.” He said to her, Becky, and Douglas.

She nodded looking across at Cole again. He was going to blow, she could see it. As soon as they were alone he was going to go fucking ballistic at her.

She walked away with the other two, not looking back, even though she could feel Cole’s eyes boring into her all the same.
