They asked more questions. Stupid questions, Maddie thought. Questions she’d never answer so she sat there glaring at them and muttered ‘classified’ with more and more emphasis as the damn interview went on.
She knew she could have had a lawyer, that she could have requested one and they’d have to provide one but what good would that do? She couldn’t exactly tell them any particulars of the case and besides she wasn’t an idiot. She knew how to answer without incriminating herself.
“Where were you on the evening before the attack?” Mullins asked.
“I was at home. All evening.” She said.
“Can anyone else corroborate that?” Mullins asked.
“Yeah Cole Black. I was at his house. Our home.” She said and they both exchanged looks. Looks like you boys didn’t do your homework properly, Maddie thought.
“And you didn’t go out anywhere?” Grey asked.
“I was tied up all evening.” She said smirking.
“And Cole didn’t leave at any point?”
“No. He was the one who’d tied me up.” She said deliberately watching them as they slowly got her meaning.
“Explain to us how your fingerprints were found at the scene.” Mullins said.
“Where?”
“On a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs.” Grey stated.
“Excuse me?” She said frowning.
“You heard.” Mullins replied.
She shook her head. Her mind racing. Was this another attempt to fit her up? Surely they were over that now? Over involving her in it all.
“What’s wrong? Realised you made a mistake?” Mullins taunted.
She scowled but bit back the retort she was itching to say.
“It’s classified.” She said again.
The door slammed open and Cole was there in the doorway, looking furious with Brandon right beside him.
“We are conducting an interview here.” Mullins said.
“No you’re fucking not.” Cole snarled.
“You just lost jurisdiction.” Brandon added waiving a piece of paper in front of them. “Uncuff her now.” He ordered.
Mullins narrowed his eyes and nodded at Grey who shook his head yanking Maddie’s wrists towards him and undoing the cuffs.
“Come on.” Cole said quietly and she got to her body limping worse than ever on her bad leg.
Cole helpedher into the back of the car and she bit back the whimper as she sat down swinging her leg around. It was dark outside and she realised she must have spent practically the entire day locked up and being questioned.
“I think she should see Hamid.” Brandon said and Cole nodded.
“Who’s Hamid?” Maddie asked looking between them.
“He’s a doctor.” Cole said. “One of ours.”
“I’ll be fine.” Maddie said.
