“Yeah something like that.” Maddie muttered.
“And neither of you got hurt?” Kelsey asked.
“No, thankfully Cole was out of the building and I don’t work out of that office.” Maddie said.
“So that’s how you two met? At work?” Cynthia asked.
“Yes.” Cole said.
“And I hear you took her to Norton Park, to meet your parents?” Alfred said smirking.
“Yes.” Cole replied. “Maddie has met my family.”
“What’s Norton Park?” Cynthia asked.
“Cole’s ancestral home. He’s technically the Honourable Lord Black although he chooses not to use that title.” Alfred said and Maddie’s jaw dropped.
“Are you serious?” She whispered to him.
He shrugged. “It’s my father’s title.” He said nonchalantly.
“But he gave it up to you, five years ago if I’m not mistaken.” Alfred replied.
“While he’s alive it’s his title.” Cole stated.
“So what you’re nobility? Blue blood?” Cynthia asked giving him a new look of approval.
“My family have served the crown since the Norman Conquest. We’ve held a peerage since fifteenth century.” Cole said.
“Fuck me.” Maddie muttered and Cole took her hand under the table.
“I told you before, don’t let it phase you.” He said quietly so that only she could hear.
“But it does mean one thing.” Alfred said looking between them both.
“And what’s that?” Cole asked.
“You have an heredity title, one that can only be passed down through the male line….”
“Meaning?” Cole said.
“Meaning you need heirs Cole. Male heirs.” Alfred said looking at Maddie who gritted her teeth.
“No I don’t. I have a sister and a cousin.” Cole said.
“Don’t you want children of your own?” Cynthia asked.
“No.” Cole said and Maddie let out a small silent breath she hadn’t realised she was holding.
“And what about you? Surely you want to be a mother?” Cynthia asked Maddie.
Maddie met her incredulous stare head on. “Nope.” She said. Cole squeezed her hand under the table.
“You could have IVF or use a surrogate.” Alfred said.
“Seriously?” Maddie snapped. “Why is my fertility on discussion?”
Alfred smirked. “I just want you to be happy Maddison.”
