“Thanks.”

“This is my nurse Katie.” He said. “Now I’ve been reviewing your medical reports. How’s the leg?”

“It’s getting better.” Maddie replied.

He nodded. “And you want to have children?”

“I want to know if there’s a possibility of it.” Maddie replied.

He nodded again, pulling a chart across and spinning it round for Maddie to see. “From the injury you received your right fallopian tube had to be removed. Do you currently have periods?”

“No.”

“None?”

“None. I haven’t had any since I was stabbed.”

He frowned. “And that was sixteen years ago?”

“Yes.”

“Hmmm.” He said.

“I take it that’s not a good sign?” Maddie replied.

“Not necessarily. Would you mind if I did a quick ultrasound?”

“Now?”

“It would only take five minutes.” He stated.

“Okay.”

Dr Taylor nodded to Katie who was stood more as a chaperone at the side. She smiled pointing to where the door was to the examination room and Maddie followed her through.

“If you lie down, undo your trousers and just pull them to down a little. I’ll put a sheet over you. Also pull your top right up to just below your bra.”

Maddie nodded and did as she was told. Katie placed a white sheet over her legs and then Dr Taylor walked in.

“This will be a bit cold.” He warned as he pulled the machine round and squirted some clear gel onto it before running it across Maddie’s belly.

“Jeez you weren’t kidding.” Maddie muttered and they both grinned.

He then looked at the screen, narrowing his eyes and Maddie looked too but she had no idea what she was looking at it.

He pushed the scanner slightly harder and Maddie tried to relax as he manoeuvred it into different angles.

“Okay. I think I’ve seen enough.” Dr Taylor said. “Come back through when you’re ready.”

He left and Katie passed her a load of tissue. “That gel gets everywhere.” She said and Maddie smiled as she tried to wipe it all off.

“I’ll let you get dressed.” Katie said before walking back through to join the doctor.

Maddie swung her legs around, did her trousers back up, pulled her top down and mentally prepared herself for whatever the hell this doctor was about to tell her.

She walked back in and sat down.

“So it’s not all bad news.” Dr Taylor said.
