“He got into a fistfight with your uncle.”

“Ohmygosh.” She tried to picture her laid-back, lean and fit uncle with his short gray hair and clear blue eyes, who would rather play Scrabble than watch football, defending himself against her brawny father. “I can’t imagine them fighting.”

“Because you remember how loving your father was. My brother was very protective of all of us. But your uncle stood up to him, and he told your father he could beat him up every day of the week, and it still wouldn’t stop him from loving me.”

Jordan sighed. “You’re so lucky. You guys are meant to be.”

“And maybe you and Jax are, too. But again, this isn’t about him. This is about you realizing that the ring on your finger doesn’t match the love in your heart. As scary as all of this feels, if you decide to end things with Todd, you will not be losing him. He’s not being ripped away from your life without warning like your family was. You are in control, and you will be the one making that decision. It’ll be hard and hurtful because you love him, and you probably always will on some level. But, honey, you don’t need Todd or Jax or any other man by your side to be whole. You’ve already proven that. But this is a lot to deal with, and we both know you live your life trying not to make waves for other people, which makes this even harder for you. Would you like to hear my suggestion?”

“Yes, please.”

“I suggest you go against everything you’ve ever done and put yourself first. Take Todd’s and Jax’s feelings out of the equation and ask yourself if you’re really ready to be done with Todd. If so, then give yourself a little space to decide whether you want to be closer to Jax. Because this is your life, and the only thing that matters is what you want.”

Out of the whole situation, the thing that hurt and scared her most wasn’t the idea of ending things with Todd. It was the thought of being without Jax.
