Chapter Twenty
“I CAN’T BELIEVE how big she’s getting.” Trixie passed her phone around the table at Tully’s Tavern, showing off pictures of her one-year-old niece, Emma Lou. “I miss her so much.”
“You’ll see her at the wedding, babe.” Nick pulled her closer. “We’ll spend extra time with them.”
Jax looked at the pictures of Emma Lou with Jordan, imagining their own babies, with Jordan’s blue eyes and her sweet smile that would have him wrapped around their little fingers.
“Emma Lou gets cuter every week,” Jordan said dreamily. “Can you imagine waking up to that little face every day?”
“I sure can.” Jax nuzzled against her cheek. He’d noticed subtle changes in Jordan these last few weeks. Like the way she sounded when she talked about the future, as if she knew they’d always be together, even though they hadn’t said I love you or talked in specifics about their next step. He’d also noticed that when she told the others about the call from Reggie tonight, there was a calm confidence to her tone, which he was sure came from knowing their family and friends supported their search.
“I can’t wait for all of you to start having babies,” Jillian said, taking the phone from Jax. “I’m going to be the best auntie!”
“Don’t you want a family of your own?” Jordan asked.
Jillian shook her head. “I don’t do diapers, and I definitely don’t do puke. Besides, babies keep you up all night, needing to be fed and changed and all of that, and I work at night. I need to be fed and cared for.”
“Wouldn’t that make it easier since you’re up already?” Jordan asked.
Jillian looked at her like she’d lost her mind. “Definitely not. My muse would run and hide, and I might never get her back.”
Everyone laughed except for Jordan.
“That might change one day,” Jordan said. “Before Jax and I got together, I couldn’t think about moving forward with any part of my life, much less having kids.” She gazed lovingly into his eyes. “But with him, I want everything.”
“Bet he loves that.” Nick smirked.
You have no idea how much.“Damn right I do.”
As Jillian handed Trixie her phone, Jordan said, “I can’t wait to meet that little cutie pie.”
“I can’t wait to introduce you to everyone back home. You’ll love them all,” Trixie said.
Jax hugged Jordan against his side and kissed her temple. “I’ll be keeping her away from your single brothers and their wandering eyes.”
“Better hold her tight,” Jillian warned. “All of Dash’s football buddies will be there, too.”
“There’s no way anyone could steal me away from Jax,” Jordan insisted. “What we have is too special.”
“And it always will be.” He kissed her again.
Jillian made kissing noises. “Not that I’m jealous or anything.” She rolled her eyes. “But seriously, where are all the hot single guys tonight? I hate to think I got all dolled up for nothing.”
“You live to get dolled up,” Jax reminded her. She looked as beautiful as ever, even if a little dressy for the local tavern, in a white blouse with a plunging neckline and billowing sleeves, which she’d paired with a cute black miniskirt.
“Girlfriend, you asked, and now you shall receive.” Trixie motioned over Jillian’s shoulder to Travis Helms, her and Nick’s close friend and neighbor. He was a single father with an adorable little girl, and he ran a horse ranch specializing in miniature horses.
Jillian looked in his direction, then leaned across the table, whispering, “Did you invite him?”
“Yes, and you’re welcome.” Trixie wiggled her shoulders.
“Are you nuts? He’s a tall, dark, and delicious DILF! He’d be fun for a night, but he’s looking for a wife, and I’m not stepmom material,” Jillian whispered harshly, seconds before Travis arrived at their table.
“Hey, y’all.” Travis eyed Jillian appreciatively. “Hey, city girl.”
Jillian spoke flirtatiously, flipping her hair over her shoulder. “How’s it going, cowboy?”
“It’d be better if you let me take you for a spin on the dance floor.”
Jillian eyed his cowboy boots. “Can you even dance in those things?”
He peeked under the table at her sky-high heels. “Can you?”
He offered his hand. Her eyes narrowed, and she took his hand, rising to her feet. “Try to keep up, cowboy.” As they walked away, Jillian looked over her shoulder, mouthing, Just one night!
“Would she really get together with him for just one night?” Jordan asked.
“I don’t want to know,” Nick and Jax said in unison. They raised their glasses as if they’d just made a toast and took a drink.
“Come on, sweetheart. I want to dance with the sexiest woman in here.” Jax pushed to his feet, bringing Jordan up with him.
“Us too!” Trixie nudged Nick, and they all headed to the dance floor.
Colorful lights rained down on Jordan as she swayed her hips and shoulders seductively, a far cry from the nervous way she’d danced with him at Nick and Trixie’s reception. Their bodies moved in perfect harmony. It seemed they were always in sync, with their thoughts, their hopes, and their lovemaking, which was out of this world. He drew her closer as they danced, bringing them thigh to thigh, chest to chest, the temperature rising between them, stoking the fire that had taken root nearly a year ago, when he’d first set eyes on his beautiful girl and was always simmering just beneath the surface.
