That made her feel a little better, but the thought of him with three women made her nauseous. “I get that it was before we met, and everyone has a past, but I was duped by Todd for so long. I don’t want to find out years from now that I overlooked red flags. Were there more?”
“Foursomes? No. Just that once. Threesomes? Yeah, a couple, when I was younger. But I was single, baby. It didn’t matter what I did, because I wasn’t cheating on anyone.”
Her breath rushed from her lungs, her knees weakening. “I fell in love with you thinking I was enough, but how can I ever be? I can’t compete with multiple women, and I don’t want to.”
“That’s good, because I don’t want anyone but you.”
“Today, maybe! But what about tomorrow? Or next year?”
“Ask me how many women I’ve been with since we met last summer.”
“I don’t think I want to know.”
“Yes, you do, baby. I haven’t been with any other woman since I met you eleven and a half months ago. You weren’t even mine, and I didn’t think I had a chance in hell of ever seeing you again, but just the thought of you was enough to flick a switch inside me and turn off any interest in anyone else. I didn’t even want to look at another woman.”
“Wh…? Is that true?” She shook her head, trying to process what he’d said.
“Yes, Jordan. You can ask Nick. He knows. I have been crazy about you since you first walked into my office, and I know how outlandish it sounds when I say I wasn’t with anyone else for all those months. But it’s as real as the fucked-up gossip you just heard.” He stepped closer, taking her trembling hands. “I would never hurt you, and if I had known we were destined to meet, I probably never would have been with those women. But I promise that I have never, and will never, lie to you.”
“I know you won’t. I trust you. I’m just…shocked.”
“I’m sorry. I can’t change the shit I did before we met, but you are the only woman I’ve ever had in my house and in my bed. You’re the only woman I’ve introduced to my family and my dog. And you are the only woman I have ever fallen in love with, and I know with every iota of my being that you are the only woman I will ever be in love with. Because whether you knew it or not, when you walked out of my office last summer, you took the biggest part of my heart with you.”
Fresh tears tumbled down her cheeks. “Don’t you hate me for freaking out?”
“No, baby. I love that you’re willing to stand up for yourself, because you should never have to compete for anything. Especially my attention, and if I’ve ever given you a reason to feel like you’re not enough, then I need to work harder.”
She gulped air into her lungs, trying to stop the tears from falling. “You haven’t.”
“Good, because I love you, Jordan Lawler. I love everything about you. I love your sensitive, hopeful heart, your sweet laughter, and your brilliant brain, and I love the way you love me. All I want is to make your life wonderful, so please don’t throw us away because of something that happened before we knew each other. I chose you, baby, and I would choose you a million times over. You have always been, and you will always be, more than enough for me.”
“I love you, too.” She wanted to tell him she loved him more than life itself and that she’d fallen into a deeper, truer love than she ever imagined possible, but she was too overwhelmed to say another word, so with her heart in her throat, she went up on her toes and kissed him.
