Xander did an upward eye movement at Lexie, Kate smiled benignly at Owen, and the old lady asked, ‘Is this your new young man, Lexie?’
‘Yes, Gran.’ Lexie grabbed Owen’s hand and squeezed.
Doctor Scott coughed, but Owen heard the muffled ‘hardly young’.
‘Hmm.’ The old lady surveyed Owen for a moment before announcing loudly: ‘Better than usual, Lexie, my dear. This one seems like a proper man. I’d keep him if I were you.’
Owen looked at the floor, not sure if he was embarrassed, amused, or just grateful that at least one of the Scott elders approved of him – marginally. Lexie squeezed his hand tighter still.
Doctor Scott cleared his throat to bring the room to order. ‘Now then, introductions over.’ He glanced at his wristwatch. ‘We’re late. Time for lunch, Elizabeth.’ The clock in the hallway chimed one o’clock, and everyone filed obediently from the room.
Owen felt his pockets, instinct telling him that he didn’t have his phone on him. He turned to Lexie, and stooping to her ear, he whispered, ‘Can I have your car keys? I’ve left my phone in your car.’
‘Dad doesn’t approve of phones at the table.’
‘All right, after the meal then.’
