Page 52 of The Comeback

Lord, am I debating this conversation in my head?

Buzz. Beep. Weston’s phone vibrates against my leg. “You’re phone.”

“Whoever it is can wait.” He leans down and kisses my lips. He’s warm and soft against me, making my knees weak.

As he cups the back of my head and takes a better angle to deepen the kiss, his phone rings again.

“Seriously?” he groans and pulls back, dragging his cellphone out of the pocket of his swim trunks. “Hello?” He tilts his head as he listens. “And?”

His mom. It’s got to be his mom. I clasp my hands together and wring them. Please let Piper have gotten good news. The girl needs something positive in her life.

He continues to pepper in questions as he listens, but I can’t determine whether it’s good or bad news.

“Okay. I’ll tell her.” He hangs up and grins. “My mom said if I ever dump you, she’s cutting me up and leaving me for dead out in the desert. There were references to vultures eating my intestines and other gross things like that piped in from Piper in the background.”

“God, I love your family.” Excitement hums in my veins. “Good news?”

“Yes.” He wraps his arms around my waist and lifts me off the ground. “The best news. Piper’s injury has healed well enough that if she can tolerate the discomfort, she can move up to jogging, bicycling, and lifting weights.” He shudders forcefully. “Not that I’ll ever let her jog or ride a bicycle outside of a gym.”

“That’s amazing news.” I cup his face and inhale. Piper is going to fly. She’s as determined as Weston but had lost her way. I’m not going to tell him that someday soon she’ll conquer her demons and ride a bicycle down the road again.

Later–much later, I’ll break the news to him.

“Thank you.” He stares at me with so much love I’m about ready to turn around to see who’s behind me. This can’t all be for me. “For once, I’m thankful for my inquiry. It’s like I was supposed to meet you. You’re my light in the dark. Thank you for giving me a chance and for being kind to my sister.”

“You make it sound like I should be on a pedestal. I don’t deserve that kind of treatment. I did what any decent person would do. And don’t think I was being ultraistic. I had ulterior motives.”

“What were those?”

“I wanted your dick. And your heart.”

“Sweetheart, you’ve got them both.” His mouth covers mine, and I no longer care who’s watching. Okay, I’m not going to hump his leg in broad daylight. I’ll wait until it’s dark and the kids leave. But, in an hour, he’d better watch out.

I dig my nails into his skull and trail my lips along his jaw until I reach his ear. “Did you bring a condom?”

“Baby, I don’t leave home without one.”

“Good.” I pull out of his arms and straighten my hair, brushing it back into place with my hand. “God.” I bite my bottom lip and look him up and down. The man is stunning. “I’d like to drag you into the bathroom and–”

His mouth claims mine again until I forget what I was saying as he teases me until my bikini bottoms are damp between my thighs. When he finally breaks for a breath, he moves his mouth to my ear. “There are kids here, so don’t tempt me.” The vibration of his lips causes my clit to twitch and my nipples to tent my bikini top. “I want to toss you over my shoulder and drag you into the nearest closet.”

“I bet Gunner has big closets.”

“Tease.” He swats my ass.

“I wasn’t teasing.” I sashay away from him. If I don’t find something else to do to distract myself with, I’m going to embarrass everyone here.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

A Couple of Hours Later

Weston

“Things seemed to be pretty cozy between you and my sister.” Knox grabs my shoulder.

“Shit, Man. You scared me.” I straighten my back and pride myself on not jumping.

He squeezes and steps to the side. “Well, if you wouldn’t have been undressing my sister with your eyes, you would’ve seen me coming toward you.” He hands me one of the two beers in his hand.
