I want to tell her so many things in this moment, but I swallow them all and kiss her instead.
“Let’s go then.” I tap the side of her ass.
Everything about her turns me on, so she’s right. We better get a move on our date before I embarrass us both by stripping her naked in her driveway. I have more self-control than that. I think.
“I’m assuming we’re having dinner,” Madelyn says as I drive to my house. “Are we cooking together?”
I glance at her quickly and catch her staring at me with an arched eyebrow.
“Not quite.”
“A movie?” She bounces in her seat.
“Would that be much of a surprise?” I shake my head in amusement.
“I don’t know. I honestly can’t figure out what it is, especially since we’re going back to your place. Maybe this box will give me a clue.” She taps her nails on the cake box.
“Don’t you dare peek,” I warn.
“Ohhh…I’ve touched a sensitive subject. So whatever is in here would be a clue.” She sing-songs.
“Let me surprise you.” I reach out for her hand, linking my fingers with hers.
“I guess I will,” she feigns exasperation.
“You’ll love it. Well, I hope so, at least.” I turn down my street, nerves mixed with excitement amplifying.
“I know I will.” Madelyn kisses my hand. “If you planned something special, I’ll love it. I love any time we spend together.”
Her words soothe my nerves, and I look over at her as I park my truck. “I do, too, babe. You’re special to me.”
“Ditto, but now it’s time for me to see this surprise. Come on.” She swings the door open and steps out without waiting for me. I laugh at her antics and round the truck to stand beside her.
“No peeking.”
“What?” Her eyebrows pinch together.
I wrap one of my hands around her face, cover her eyes, and take the box from her. Leaning down, I whisper, “Trust me.”
Madelyn shivers, likely from my breath tickling her.
“Don’t let me fall.”
“Never.” Unless she’s falling for me. I won’t prevent that from happening.
I guide her up the three steps to my door and hand her the box so I can grab the keys and unlock it. With the door open, I take the box and lead the way through my house. I drop off the cake on the counter.
“I don’t smell food, so you haven’t cooked yet.” She guesses as I walk us to my back door.
“I think we’re outside again.” She comments as we step onto my patio. “What the heck could you have done?”
“Ready?” I whisper by her ear again, inhaling her sweet perfume and dropping a kiss on the side of her neck.
“Yes,” she breathes out. “Also, having my eyes covered and feeling you like that makes my body more attuned to your touches and kisses.”
“Madelyn…” I clench my jaw. “Trying to be romantic here.”
“That is romantic,” she says innocently, shrugging her shoulders.
