Prologue
One Year Ago
Mikaela
There is a silence that hugs against my skin and a weightlessness that sinks into my bones. I know I should feel something as I wait here, but my mind is heavy and I can't remember what I'm waiting for. I can't remember what I am hoping for. I can't remember what I am supposed to feel anymore. I can do nothing but stare out of the shattered glass, past the billowing smoke, and watch as he cries on the sidewalk.
He isn't moving. He isn't coming to me. He isn't getting up. He is just crying.
Slowly, with a finality I should be more afraid of, darkness creeps into my vision and latches onto my mind. I welcome it with open arms. As the keening and crying of sirens and metal shatters the silence, I let the darkness in. And as it takes me, it brings me one last gift.
