“You’re surprisingly good with children, Jace,” Sam comments, looking at me in confusion.
I know I hadn’t been close with Sam when he lived here, but I didn’t think he thought I was some kind of monster. Kids are much easier than adults. They’re not constantly judging you and they have this innocence that just makes you feel happy around them. I’m not sure if everyone feels that way, but my wolf and I both liked pups very much.
Maybe someday we’d have to get pups of our own?
“Pups are fun,” I tell him with a shrug, not wanting to get into it any deeper right now.
“This is gonna be a tricky one… What’s your favorite ice cream?” I ask, turning back to Scarlett.
Instead of signing to Sam she just shrugs and shakes her head.
“Have you never had ice cream before?” I guess shocked and she just nods her head.
“Well don’t you worry your pretty little head, after we get some real food in you, I’ll break into Silas’ stash and you can try as many flavors as you want,” I tell her with a wink and I’m relieved when she smiles brightly once more.
Pulling my phone out like I did last time I hand it to Scarlett with the note app open and ask her a question that may be a bit harder for her to answer.
“How did you come to meet Silas and the others at the coven?” I ask, and she doesn’t look scared as she starts typing on my phone. When she hands it back I read it out loud so that Sam can hear it.
“My job on the farm is to take care of the prisoners. At first I used magic so that they wouldn’t see me, but they seemed nice so I showed myself. The others there were nice too, but not awake like Silas, Mila and Jade,” I say and it has me shocked.
“So there are still other people held prisoner there?” I ask gently even as my heart starts beating faster.
A slow nod from her has me wondering how the Black Coven has been getting away with this shit for years with no repercussions.
Damn Elders aren’t doing their jobs.
Just as I’m about to ask more questions, the timer goes off and I distract myself with getting the food out of the oven. My head is going a million miles an hour and I just wish this night would end. Even though I’m so happy to have Silas back I’m afraid he’s not the same man I used to know.
With him and Bell in mourning for their mate that leaves me to deal with the pack and all its drama.
Yeah, we’re pretty much fucked.
Chapter Two
DARIUS
I’m not sure what’s going on with my kitten but since she woke up at the apartment after passing out in the car, she’s been acting strange. She keeps her distance and won’t look me in the eye as if she’s scared of me or ashamed. Mila tried to ask her questions about Delphina's reaction in the parking lot but Jade hasn’t spoken a word since we arrived home.
It’s starting to make me worried something is seriously wrong. I offered to make her some food since she’d clearly been starved in that place and lost a bit of weight, but she turned me down with the shake of her head. Her eyes look haunted and her skin is pale.
“Are you sure you don’t need a doctor kitten? Dell has one of her mates coming to town that’s a supe doctor, I’m sure he wouldn’t mind checking you over,” I suggest but she just shakes her head.
We’re in our bedroom just the two of us and I can faintly hear Mila snoring on the couch already passed out. She’d told me about their hours of running and how exhausted she is and a few seconds later she was out like a light. Jade hasn’t gone to sleep yet which surprised me since I knew she didn’t run shifted very often, and Mila told us they ran for hours tonight to escape.
“Just tell me what’s wrong kitten and I’ll do whatever I can to make it go away, please. I can’t stand seeing you like this,” I plead with the woman I love more than my own immortal life.
“You’ll hate me,” she whispers, and my heart clenches in my chest.
“There’s nothing that you could ever do to make me hate you, nothing,” I vow coming over to kneel in front of her as she sits on the edge of the bed. Taking her hands in mine I give a squeeze hoping the support will help her open up to me.
“When the witches put me in the cage with Silas they drugged me, giving me a false heat. At first I didn’t know what was going on but Silas helped me the first night,” she says and then pauses looking up at me with tears in her eyes. I don’t really understand why she’s this distraught about Silas helping her or what a heat is, but I’m grateful that she had help.
“So he helped you, why would I hate you for that?” I ask, perplexed.
“The only way to get through a heat is to fuck Dar. I had sex with Silas so many times in that cage I lost count but the witches just kept giving me the heat drugs! I’m so sorry,” she sobs and for a moment I’m frozen in place. On the one hand the woman I love had sex with another man, but on the other she had no control over it. Did she really think I would just toss her aside because the Black Coven took her control away from her?
“Kitten, I love you, and I’ll never leave you. You’re stuck with me for life, you better just get used to it,” I tell her, as she sobs. Pulling her into my arms I hold her tight and rub my hands up and down her back until she calms enough to pull away.
