“Unfortunately, Abby, that’s not how others are going to look at it. Money doesn’t have to be the motive. Jealousy, revenge, anger. A crime of passion. Those are all possibilities as well.”
“I didn’t kill Marty. You have to prove it. I’m innocent.”
“I’m trying to help you, but you’re not making it easy. From now on I want you to take your lawyer’s advice. Most of it, anyway. And stop talking to reporters. That’s not doing you any favors either.”
“My attorney said that I needed to get my story out there.”
“Your attorney was wrong. Just lie low for awhile and give me a chance to find out who really killed Marty. Don’t make my job any harder than it has to be, okay?”
“You’re going to stay on the case then?” Abby asked, pressing her hands over her heart. “You’re going to keep working on it?”
He was. Against his better judgment.
As Logan had pointed out, the sooner they found the killer, the sooner he could get back to normal life.
As if running for governor was normal for anyone.
Other men his age were retiring. Going fishing and playing golf. But not him. No, he was making his life difficult. On purpose.
He had to find a murderer. Fast.
