RAND
It’ssmart to put some distance between Joe and me, if only because there’s a real possibility for accidental dry-humping in the coat-check closet if we’re not careful.
I scan the room, and everyone oozes elegance and sophistication except for Joe. He’s gorgeous in his well-tailored suit, but he still looks like a mobster. In fact, I’ve decided that the nicer the suit, the more dangerous he looks.
And tonight, he’s lethal.
God, I want him to fuck me while wearing that suit.
Unfortunately, with thoughts wandering down so many lovely paths, I nearly run over my texting buddy.
“Mads! My apologies, I didn’t see you.”
Mads grins up at me. He’s of average height, on the skinny side, and has a head full of shiny, thick, wavy black hair. His skin is a deep velvet brown, and his smile lights up a room, even one this large and grand. He’s part firefly, part absent-minded professor, and very much the opposite of me.
“No shit, Rand. You’re way off in la-la land. What gives?”
“Got a lot on my mind these days. It’s nice to see you in person though. Feels like I haven’t seen you in forever.”
“Same,” he says, giving me a fast, hard hug. “It’s been crazy.”
“What’s been going on with you?”
He shrugs. “We’re working through a government contract that I can’t talk about, but it’s eating my lunch. I should’ve stayed in the private sector.”
“And leave all of those defense dollars on the table? I think not.”
He shakes his head, looking around the room. “Let’s change the subject, eh? Tell me about this Joe person. We haven’t caught up since everything went down. Is he really staying at your place?”
“How do you know that?”
“I have my sources. Anyway, he’s kind of yummy, isn’t he? Looks dangerous in that suit tonight.”
My eyebrows stitch together. “You saw him already?”
“Are you kidding? Everybody here is talking about the guy who tore down Wolfe Athletics and is now rebuilding it with his bare hands.”
“Hey now, there’s a whole bunch of us working together on the rebuild. It’s actually kind of incredible.”
Mads’ large brown eyes scrutinize my face as his lip ticks up at the corner. “Looking kind of wistful there, Mr. Wolfe.”
“You’ll be happy to know that you were right about the alpha thing. I had no idea how much it was holding me back. He’s shown me an entirely new way of looking at the workforce. It’ll revolutionize business in Manhattan…if people are willing to listen to him.”
Mads tilts his head. “You like him.”
I nod. “I do. He’s a good man. Genuinely decent. Even though he does look like he might kill us all in that suit.”
Crinkling his nose at me, Mads shakes his head. “Don’t try to pull a fast one on me. You like him like him.”
“Oh, shut up.”
“Not when your eyes go all anime when you talk about him.”
I grumble under my breath, wondering how a guy I spend more time texting than speaking to in person can read me so well.
“Ha! I’m taking your little mutter as confirmation. So…you’re sleeping with him?”
“Shh.” I grab his jacket and drag him over behind one of the large columns. “Say it a little louder, why don’t you? One or two of the Fortune 500 crowd didn’t hear you.”
