Chapter One
Jim
The night before Thanksgiving…
I’d been gone for three years. Coming home, all I wanted was some rest, relaxation, and time alone in my hometown of Green Mills, Texas. So I headed to the park a block from my home. It had been my sanctuary for so many nights when I needed to clear my head. And that’s exactly what I thought I was going to do then.
But I couldn’t have been more wrong.
My body reacted the instant I saw her sitting there on the bench, an absolute vision of beauty. She was shoeless, swinging her bare feet across the grass, wearing nothing but a University of Texas tank top and a pair of short-short sweat shorts that hid nothing from me.
I’d come to relax, but my body was instantly tense and my heart rate was jacked.
Oh my God…
I’d been in China for three years, working as a civil engineer for the construction company my best friend, Randy, owned. After my divorce, I needed to get away for a while, so he sent me there to oversee the construction of a major dam.
I’d been surrounded by men most days, and the girls I did see were nothing like her.
Thick, gorgeous curls of blonde hair flowed down her neck and draped across her collarbones. She had plump lips that would make even the Kardashian girls jealous (but hers were natural of course), and a face like a goddess.
I felt my whole body go hot as I stared across the twilight at her. She wasn’t even aware of me yet, but my entire world was revolving around her.
I was hooked like a catfish caught by an experienced noodler.
Nothing about what she was wearing was meant to entice, but it was impossible for her to hide her beauty, her luscious curves, and flawless physique. My pants tightened as I stood there and watched her, wondering what a beauty like this was doing in my neighborhood.
Green Mills, Texas was a town that really hadn’t changed much since the 1950s. It was quaint, quiet, and filled with good, hardworking people. It was a community that I loved, but when I left three years ago, there were no girls like her living there.
Once kids in Green Mills got old enough, they got out of town and only came back to visit. It was a great place to grow up and retire, but not a great place to find excitement in your teens and twenties.
So what was she doing here?
Had she just moved in with her family? Maybe she was a cousin or something who was visiting for Thanksgiving? Or maybe she was just passing through on a trip through Texas with her friends…but if that was true…where were they?
Rather than debate myself any longer, I walked right up to her.
She didn’t see me until I was only a few feet away and a branch snapped under my foot. She jumped and quickly turned to face me.
“Don’t worry,” I smiled. “I’m not a mugger.”
A nervous giggle escaped her perfect lips and she smiled up at me.
Gorgeous…
“Thank God for that,” she replied with a hint of Texas twang. “But that doesn’t rule out serial killer…”
She had beauty and spunk. This girl would win Miss Texas in a heartbeat if she felt like signing up. But for some reason I knew that a girl like her wouldn’t be interested.
She was smart, driven, but most of all—she was pure.
I don’t know how I knew. I just did.
“Not one of those either,” I told her. “But what are you doing out here on your own in the park at night? Maybe you’re the mugger.”
Her lips twisted into a smile and her eyes sparkled beneath the remaining glow of the evening. The bulge in my pants grew and I shifted slightly to keep it from being obvious.
I was on fire for her. She must have felt the heat in my gaze, because a tiny blush appeared in her cheeks. She ducked her head and pretended to fix her hair so she could hide it from me.
I was doing everything in my power to keep from pressing her down against that bench and taking her right then and there.
“I wouldn’t be strong enough to mug anyone,” she replied finally.
