I didn’t tell Tanya that I was coming back. I told her the same lie that I had told the head librarian. That I had a family emergency and I had to go back home. She said I should keep in touch, I did for a day or two and then the questions would mean answering her back with more lies, so I stopped.

I opened the door, and she wasn’t in, part of me felt relieved. I was craving sleep, so I opened my closet. Then dumped my bag, but it was as if someone had been through it. It was then that I’d noticed it. My bag. The one Gucci bag that I had to get me through college was gone.

Tanya?

Had she taken it?

Had she decided that I wasn’t coming back, so she put it on the site?

She wouldn’t do that to me, would she?

I didn’t trust anyone anymore, my hands were shaking as I dialed her number. It went straight to voicemail. No more did I crave sleep, and I couldn’t even think straight about going to class. I wanted answers. And I needed them right now.
