“You know, I may work through lunch today. Weddings are always so stressful, not only for me but for the staff as well. It’ll be a little insane, so it might not be a good idea.”
“How about dinner, then?”
I hesitated, trying to think of an excuse, but I couldn’t. “We’ll see,” was all I could say and quickly dressed, waiting for him to do the same.
“You have to eat, Nora. Surely there’ll be at least a few minutes we could spend together. Just text me when you’re free.”
“I don’t think you understand just how bad this can be, and I really won’t know what to expect until I get in the thick of it.”
His expression was hard to read, though he tried to soothe me with his words. “Take care of what you need to do, sweetie. I’m here to support you.” He kissed me on the forehead, gathered his things, and walked out the door.
I fell to pieces as soon as he left, knowing I’d just nailed the coffin to our relationship. But I wasn’t lying. There were wedding preparations to do, so I pulled myself together and walked toward the kitchen, kicking myself all the way for ever having dared to fall in love.
