“And how about what I want?” I say, thumping my fist against my chest.
“Don’t be so selfish all the time. You’re not a little girl anymore. You’re an adult now and you have responsibilities to this family.” She glares at me, but then her face softens, and she rests her hand on my shoulder. “Your father is right. All these dreamy notions will do you no good. These silly girls who fancy themselves in love, who think they are in love, only end up disappointed and broken-hearted. Better to find a man you know will be a good fit for you, your family, and your position in society.”
I shake my head again, tears beginning to well in my eyes. “I’d rather have no man than him.”
“You’ve just gotten off on the wrong foot, that’s all. Everyone says what a charming young man he is. We’ll go to lunch at his parent’s tomorrow–”
“Tomorrow!” I choke.
“Yes, Alexa, tomorrow. I think it is very likely he is planning to propose and make all this official.”
“No,” I gasp.
“Alexa! Don’t be silly. I promise you, tomorrow you’ll see what a fuss you’re making.” She smiles at me. “You’ll be embarrassed about this conversation.”
I step back from her, wrapping my arms around my ribs. “I won’t. I’ve seen a side to him you haven’t.”
“We all have good and bad sides, Alexa,” my mother says more firmly, before striding from the room and leaving me in the shimmering light.
