He wanted to tell her not to be so dramatic, and he was certain it would pass within a week, but that wouldn’t help his case. “I am sorry. One day, I promise you’ll look back and thank me. You’ll know I was right.”
She shook her head and sauntered off, leaving Henry alone in the shadows to sigh in exhaustion. Rarely did he have to put off so forward a woman, and especially an innocent, at that.
But now that she’d been removed for good, he could get back to his pursuit of the more mature Mrs. Palmer. When he stepped back into the ballroom, he caught a glimpse of her red dress, fleeing out the doors to the balcony with another young man in hand, another well-known rake. So she had found different company in Henry’s absence. It was no matter; they would have another time in the future no doubt, unless the beautiful woman decided to marry again.
But he would never have that problem.
He was determined to remain a bachelor till the end of his days and fill his nights with all the willing women he could find.
His mind turned to Miss Roberts’s friend. She was a lovely looking girl, that much was obvious, with those dark eyes and perfect blonde curls. Though she wasn’t the normal sort he pursued, there was something about her that had drawn him in. It was the defiance in her eyes, like she already knew him and all his flaws without having barely exchanged a word with him. Trying to win over a woman like that would be a challenge, one Henry almost found worth the effort.
Almost.
