She licked her lips, shifting in her seat. "Luke, let's watch the show. Don't distract me, okay?"
Fucking hell, she was adorable.
"Why? Actually, let me rephrase that. What do I get for not distracting you?"
She narrowed her eyes. "So that's the game we're playing. I'll think about your reward. But first, don't distract me."
"You know how to play."
She wiggled her eyebrows. "Yes, I do."
She shouldn't have even bothered with that warning, as she was so fascinated about what happened on stage that she completely ignored me. As for me, I was more captivated by watching her watch the show than the show itself. It wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't my first choice of entertainment, and it wasn't why I was here tonight. I was here for her.
At intermission, we ordered a lot of snacks and didn’t have time to finish them before we had to go back inside. Megan only ate half the popcorn. She put the paper bag in her purse, whispering, “We can eat it after we leave.”
Her eyes were glued to the front for the rest of the show. When it ended, she finally looked at me, smiling from ear to ear.
"Did you like it?” she asked.
“Yes."
She narrowed her eyes. "That's not a lot of enthusiasm right there."
"I looked at you more than I watched the show."
Her jaw dropped. "What? How? When? I didn't realize."
"I know. I didn't even have to work too hard to keep my word. I could have just been an empty seat."
"That's not true," she said.
We waited for the first round of visitors to leave because everyone ran to the doors at once. We only followed the crowd after it had cleared a bit, picking up the flowers before leaving the theater.
Once outside, she pointed to a bench.
"Want to share some snacks?" she asked.
I looked her straight in the eyes. "You can have everything, Megan. I just want you."
Her lips parted. "God, Luke, I don't know what to say when you tell me things like that."
"It's the truth," I said, walking with her. We laid down everything on a bench next to the L station. I stepped closer to her. She was shivering.
"Are you cold?" I started to take off my jacket, but she stopped me, putting a hand on my chest.
"No, I'm not. It's just being here, with you...." She took in a deep breath. "I missed you too."
I kissed her the next second, tangling our tongues, putting a hand at the small of her back and bringing her closer to me. I was starved for her as if I hadn't tasted her in months.
Fucking hell, I had to get a grip on myself. I pulled my hand back but still held her close to me.
"I want this," she whispered. "Whatever this is. I’m just not sure what it can be. After the way things ended with my ex... I’m not ready for anything, to be honest. It left me in a bad place. I promised myself I’d take things easy and not jump headfirst into anything.”
I liked that she was opening up to me. I wanted to push for more information, but now was not the time. I realized I was only used to this kind of honesty with my family. But I wanted the same with Megan.
I also realized something else. After my disappointing relationship with Cammy, I went through a wild phase and had plenty of time to get over it. But it was different for Megan. She was obviously still hurt from her breakup, and I wanted to take it all away.
“We just need to be careful—"
