flying into her face.

Dani walked ahead, out of the parking lot, and down the

white sand stretch. Emily hung back, just so she could watch

Dani. Ostensibly she was looking at the water. At the sand. At

the sun sinking low, getting ready for a dazzling display.

“Beautiful,” she whispered, but she wasn’t looking at the

scenery. She was looking at Dani.

Dani turned and Emily quickly threw her eyes over to the

left, taking in the empty beach. Well, it wasn’t empty, but

compared to when she’d last been here, it was quite devoid of

people. Did no one come to the beach in the evening? That

 seemed like the best time.

Even if she never would have thought of it herself.

This was all Dani’s idea, and it was quite an idea. Emily

couldn’t see how she’d come up with it, but she was so glad

 they were there.

It was nice to think about sand, water, sunsets, and Dani in

tight, short shorts, instead of dwelling on her own problems.

She’d have to face her parents soon enough. Maybe tomorrow

or the day after, but right now, this was a good way to spend

the time while everyone cooled down.

“How about here?” Dani didn’t wait for a response. She set

the bag down, pulled out the two black bath towels and spread

them over the sand. She sat down on one, grabbed an apple

from the bag, and bit into it. “This was actually a good idea,”

she said, chewing and looking off towards the water.

“Yeah,” Emily whispered. “It was.” She sat down beside

Dani. “I’ve never done this before.”

“You’ve never been to the beach? But you knew all about

 this one.”
