“There you are miss!”A maid said as she ran toward me.

“Were you looking for me long?” I asked, a little concerned. “What’s the matter?”

She shook her head. “All is well, Miss. Just trying to hunt you down as Mr. Heller requested that you follow me.”

“Okay,” I said. “Lead the way.”

She nodded and then turned and led me to my room. My curiosities were getting the better of me. “King wants me to come to my room?”

“Yes,” the maid said. “You’ll understand why soon enough.”

“You don’t say,” I said.

“I am under orders not to give anything away. However, I would keep your eyes open,” she added. “You won’t want to miss this.”

She opened the door, and I was instantly greeted by four flowing dresses standing on display. I gasped. “Oh my…”

The maid giggled. “Mr. Heller insists that you try each one of them on and wear your favorite one tonight.

“This must be the surprise they talked about,” I said.

The maid shrugged. “I’ll help you in and out of them. Which one do you want to start off with first?”

The first one in line was green. Simpler than the other three dresses, but just as beautiful. I pointed to it. “That one.”

Minutes later, I was laced into the dress. Though the shape fit perfectly, it was uncomfortable. The sparkling beading that covered the bodice was itchy on my skin. The fabric was too stiff for my liking as well.

“What do you think?” the maid asked. “The green really compliments your eyes.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think this is the right one.”

“I agree. Which one do you want to try next?” she asked.

“The next one in line I suppose,” I said.

It was blue with lots of lace and a design of vines that stretched from the waist toward the end of the skirt, fading into a soft blue color that reminded me of Declan’s eyes. With the dress on, I noticed some of the leaves were iridescent and caught the light while there were bits of silver that glittered along the skirt.

Though the dress was beautiful. I couldn’t tolerate the idea of wearing it for hours on end.

“This one compliments your complexion,” the lady said.

I shook my head. “It’s not very comfortable. Beautiful, for sure, but it’s not something I want to wear.”

“Agreed,” she said. “The next one in line then?”

I nodded. “Please.”

The third dress was a beautiful scarlet color with black lace accents. It moved and flowed around me when I walked, giving the illusion I floated along the floor. Though I was thrilled to have tried on such a beautiful dress, ultimately, the color was wrong for my complexion.

“Such a beautiful red,” the maid said. “Don’t you think?”

I shrugged. “I don’t hate it. I think it washes me out though.”

“So this one’s a no then?”

“I’ll chalk this one up to a maybe,” I said.

“Very well, Miss,” the maid said. “Ready for the last dress?”
