Her lips pulled into a curve. “Hey.”

“Hey, yourself,” I said.

“How long was I out?” she asked.

“A few hours,” I said.

She moved her arm and winced.

“Careful. You’re going to be sore for a while,” I said.

She sat up fully and studied the bandage covering her arm. “You did this?”

I nodded. “With a little help.”

She kissed me on my cheek. “Thank you.”

“Well, if I had known this was what it took to get a kiss, I would have done it a long time ago,” I said with a smirk.

She chuckled. “Maybe.”

“You had us all worried, you realize,” I said as she sat up fully.

“I doubt that,” she said.

“You shouldn’t,” I said. “You’ve become a rather fond part of our group. Even Milo had a crack in his normal demeanor.”

She snorted. “He has emotions? I’m shocked.”

I chuckled. “I know, right? The point is, I’m really glad you are awake and doing better.”

“Me too.” She looked around. “Where are we?”

“An abandoned mill,” I said. “This is not the palace you deserve, but it was the best we could do.”

She chuckled. “Please. I’m no princess.”

I stared into her blue eyes. “But you deserve to be treated like one.”

She smiled. A hint of rose color filled her cheeks. I reached up and brushed the back of my fingers along her cheek. Her breaths hitched, and I went in for a kiss. My lips brushed against hers and she sucked in a breath. She didn’t pull away, which made me deepen the kiss. My tongue brushed along hers and her arms wrapped around my shoulders, pulling me closer.

My heart hammered in my chest. I was worried about taking this too far, but I also couldn’t find the will to stop.

Thankfully, she pulled away. “What happened to the general?”

I frowned. “He won’t bother us anymore.”

“He’s dead then?” she asked with a somber tone in her voice.

“Yes,” I said.

“Did I?” she asked, leaving the rest of the question unspoken.

“What? Kill him?” I asked. “No. Milo did.”

“Really?” She genuinely seemed surprised.

I nodded. “I’m so glad you are okay. You had us all worried for a while.”
