Seconds later, she turned around and started walking deeper into the forest.

I rolled my eyes. Her mood was getting rather annoying. Especially her insistence on walking away from me. If she wasn’t careful, she was going to get herself killed, and there wasn’t a damn thing that I could do about it. “You’re going the wrong way!”

She didn’t stop. I let a soft sigh float between my lips. Calvin and Aidan started to go after her. I held out my hand to stop them. “I’ll handle this.”

“Oh yeah. You’re handling this real well,” Calvin remarked. “Gold star for letting her get farther away. Nice touch.”

I ignored him and raised my voice to carry toward her. “Your best bet is to honor our agreement. There are things far worse in this forest than trees, and none of them will give you the chance to say a word before… well, you’ll find out. Either way, I still get the amulet.”

I kept my voice smooth and unenthusiastic. Hopefully, my warning would make her stop walking.

She stopped with a final stomp. Just as I had predicted. The stomp was an added bonus. Her hands were clenched at her sides. Her round ass faced me with all its tantalizing glory. She sighed heavily. I smirked and wondered what she was going to do next. Would she throw another ball of fire at us? The trees certainly wouldn’t love that. Maybe she would find another hole to run through. That would make for a more challenging night for sure.

I almost held my breath in anticipation.

“Fine,” she said.

Curious, indeed. I had thought for her to put up more of a fight.

She faced us and said, “How do I know you’ll hold up your end of the deal?”

I shrugged. “You don’t. I suppose that is why our little deal is called blind trust.”

She looked around her as though she was weighing her options again.

“Think of it this way… what choice do you have?” I asked. “You can come with us, where you will survive the night. Or you can take your chances in the blood forest on your own.”

She leveled her gaze on me. I smirked, having won her attention.

“Choice is yours. However, I highly suggest you keep your end of the deal and come with us.”

She nodded to Calvin. “You!”

Calvin’s eyebrows drew closer together. “What?”

“Is what he said true?” she asked.

I almost chuckled. Like he would betray me. I was his only way of keeping his head. Or so he believed, and I rather liked him believing that. Besides, so many of my dealings rely on people believing in my lies. I had become quite good at deceiving people. I didn’t see that ending any time soon.

Calvin shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine.”

“You made a deal with him too?” she asked.

“Don’t remind me. Besides, I have my reasons. As you do,” Calvin said, sounding bored with the topic.

I sighed loudly and dramatically. “What will it be, Alice?”

“Allison,” she said. “My name is Allison. Not Alice. Only my mom called me that and you are certainlynother.”

“Clearly,” I said. “My question remains the same.”

She took a few more minutes to think things over. “Fine. Lead the way, and if you so much as put a finger on me or my amulet without my permission I will burn you into a crisp.”

I smiled even wider. A chuckle bubbled in my throat. “I do like your spunk.”

“Don’t push your luck,” she said. “Move.”

I raised my hands in the air as if surrendering, all the while laughing to myself. She was making this a rather fun development. Too bad it was going to end soon. I would have loved to see her potential blossom.
