“And antique,” Cassie said. “Please don’t wear that to work. I would hate for you to lose it.”

Allison waved away her sister’s concern. “Nonsense.”

She pulled up the chain and slipped it over her head. The second the amulet rested against her chest, almost directly above her heart, a strange, electrical buzzing sensation covered her entire body. The static vibrations radiated from her heart, right where the amulet rested.

A pinch formed in her forehead as confusion set in.

That was weird, she thought.

“What’s wrong?” Cassie asked, noting the expression on her sister’s face.

Allison shook her head. “Nothing. Just my imagination.”

Thankfully, the sensation slowly faded, and the amulet warmed to her skin. Though she had lied to her sister about the feeling that washed over her initially, she didn’t have time to explain the strange electrical buzzing or her sanity. She simply left things as they were and made a note to investigate things a little further once she was home from her shift.

Calvin

Getting rest with Milo around was about as pleasant as being hung upside down and whipped. Though Calvin might entertain the idea in certain, private circles, he was seconds from snapping. Milo’s constant chatter grated on the man’s nerves. He never stopped running his mouth long enough for Calvin to have a few moments of peace. Part of him figured Milo knew damn well what he was doing, and that only angered him more.

After several hours of trying, Calvin gave up. He sat on the edge of the bed and ran his hands over his face.

“Of course, we could go about things…” Milo said.

“Do you ever shut the hell up?” Calvin spat.

Milo ceased his pacing to stare at Calvin.

“If you insist on keeping me awake, this would be a great time to give me some answers, this way my time is not a total fucking loss,” Calvin growled out.

Though Calvin had agreed on the whole blank check in order to keep his head, he knew nothing beyond the basics. Steal an item. That was all. There was no information given about what the item was or why it was so important that it had to be stolen by him and him alone. No information on where the item is located or how difficult such a thing would be to steal. Hell, he wasn’t even sure if the damn thing existed in the first place. He could very well be entertaining some game of Milo’s for all Calvin was aware of.

Needless to say, Calvin was seriously questioning his life’s choices.

Milo always insisted on leaving breadcrumbs of information when he saw fit to leave them. When Calvin started to lose patience on this whole charade. It was bad enough Camelia’s goons were following them. They even had caught up to them a good time or two before losing them in the forest a few days back.

Regardless, Calvin needed sleep. And if he couldn’t get sleep, he was going to get answers. There was no in-between.

“All in good time,” Milo said with a smirk.

If there was one thing you didn’t do with Calvin, it was to underestimate him. And that was something he exceedingly grew tired of. And Milo had tested his patience for the last time.

Calvin launched from the bed and tackled Milo to the ground. He lowered himself close to Milo, seconds away from shifting and ripping the annoying man into pieces, and said, “Either give me the information I want, shut up so that I can actually sleep, or I’m out.”

Milo huffs. An edge of laughter riddled his words as he said, “Your mood is pretty sour lately. When was the last time you got laid?”

Calvin growled.

Milo shrugs. “Fine. Fine. Just let me up. I like you and all, but you’re not my type.”

Calvin removed himself and allowed Milo enough room to sit on the floor. “Talk.”

“The item we are searching for is an amulet,” Milo began. “One thought to have been lost long ago, but my sources tell me it had recently been activated. The amulet holds the key to us both having everything we have ever wanted… most especially freedom and a way to defeat Camelia for good.”

“So where is this amulet?” Calvin asked. He didn’t believe the amulet was the answer to all their problems, but Milo made a deal with him, and now that he had information to go off of, he could form a loose plan to take the damn thing and get out from under Milo’s presence.

“That is the tricky part. One where we need another to aid us with,” Milo said.
